First off, Sam Rockwell. Then Chirstopher Walken. And Collin Farrell.

I think there's subtle brilliance in the dialogue of the movie. Especially at the end in the desert. I won't spoil it, but I just love how the characters react to things, little things, that normal people like you and I would.

Anyway, the movie was on a premium channel last night and it was the second watch for me and I caught some great interactions on screen. I guess the TBL thread had me thinking about movies like this that are really smart comedies. At least that's how I think of it.

Thoughts on 7 Pshychopaths? LOVED the ending, too.

"Subtle" is code for "I'm smarter than you"

I thought it would be awesome....NcDonagh and all, trailer was pretty good, etc. But then the reviews came in and weren't so favorable, a couple people I knew saw it and didn't like it.

I knew I would watch it eventually, but I didn't make it a priority.

Fast forward to home video times and I watched it....

It was awesome. I thought it was a ton of fun and everyone nailed it which is kind of important in a film like that.

Thought it was good not great. I was more caught off guard by the tone of the movie. I need to watch it again.

I definitely don't think I'm smarter than anyone here. Maybe I should rephrase it...it's not a slapstick, water from the flower on my lapel wakka wakka wakka movie. But there are just things in it that make me chuckle...like

***SPOILERS***

In the end when Rockwell is explaining how he'd end the movie and he's making the gun sounds and he carries them out, looks at his script...pauses...and goes, "yep [more gun sounds]"...

And when Rockwell is pissed that Woody Harrelson brought a flare gun to the final shootout. I don't know, man...I appreciate those little things.

I had high expectations because I love In Bruges, and I wasn't disappointed at all. Was even better on the second viewing.

Why do people use hyperbole when talking about movies, actors, movie scores? Outstanding shouldn't be thrown aroud as it is.

I think it starts better than it finishes. I still like it though.

I felt the same way - after reading this forum, I was expecting greatness.

Instead, I found myself bored throughout the movie. Might need to watch again.

I think this is the reason lots of people get turned off on movies. Now, is "I need to watch it again" a bad thing for a movie? Is a movie something you should see just once?

I don't think so. I think if a movie makes you realize you need to see it again it's done its job. Like I said many, many times before. I hated a lot of Ferrell movies on my first viewing...I didn't even care for TBL the first time I saw it. But I gave it more chances because I told myself surely I can't be right and everyone else that loves this movie is wrong.

No, comment! I think it's a good thing to want to see it more than once. I like finding little things in movies that I might have missed on the first viewing.

...but the movie IS outstanding. I think it was one of the best movies of the year in 2012. Thoroughly entertaining, and I'm always a sucker for movies about writing. Sorry, it's my wheelhouse. I am a total sucker for meta commentary on writing, and how the script subtly changes as he rewrites the ending.

Hans: Marty, I've been reading your movie. Your women characters are awful. None of them have anything to say for themselves. And most of them get either shot or stabbed to death within five minutes. And the ones that don't probably will later on.
Marty: Well, it's a hard world for women. I guess that's what I'm trying to say.
Hans: Yeah, it's a hard world for women, but most of the ones I know can string a sentence together.

This. The casting was phenomenal. If we want to talk underrated actors, Sam Rockwell is running away with it.
