A car insurance topic on the money board got me thinking...

If I have a car insurance policy in Louisiana, which is AFAIK a tort state rather than a no fault state, and I do not have uninsured motorist coverage, what happens/what is the process in the following circumstances:

1. I am in a crash with another vehicle. My vehicle is significantly damaged or destroyed. The other vehicle is determined to be at fault, but is not insured. Can I pay my own deductable and have my vehicle repaired or replaced through my own policy?

2. I am in a hit and run, my vehicle is destroyed. The other vehicle cannot be identified or found. Can I pay my own deductable and have my vehicle replaced?

3. Hit and run, my vehicle destroyed, the other vehicle/driver is eventually identified but has no insurance. Can I pay my own deductable and have my vehicle replaced?

Yes--if you have collision coverage.

Yes--if you have collision coverage and the hit and run is reported and meets the requirements of "hit and run" of your policy.

Yes. If you have collision.

UM/UIM has nothing to do with your scenarios unless it is UM Property Damage, which is an absolutely BS layer of coverage that is the same as collision.

What would UM Property Damage do for me if I have collision?

the same as collision. Except that it might not carry a deductible. Not quite sure on that one. Get adequate liability, similar UM/UIM bodily injury limits and comprehensive and collision. If you have health insurance I'd skip med pay and Economic only UM or UM PD. They are BS coverages.

Of if they are underinsured. Additionally, it covers the medical costs of any passengers in your vehicle (to policy limits) in the same situation, or if you or a passenger are injured as the result of a hit and run.

Correct or if they are under insured. Most people in La. are under insured. It covers medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering, etc.

EOUM only covers medical bills and lost wages, i.e special damages.

You can get UM property damage coverage.

Why would anyone not have UM coverage, though?

I respectfully disagree, and I sincerely hope that you are never in a situation where you wish you had UM coverage.

What about scarring/disfigurement? What if you can't have sex for a couple years due to an accident?

How is money going to help that?

I can pay for plastic surgery with all the money I save on not paying UM

ETA: and many people disagree with me but nobody has been able to give me a good enough reason to go out and buy it

Well, if you weren't having sex before the accident, you're right. No pain and suffering money for you.

Sure. Good luck with that.

Why use your own health insurance when you can use UM?
