From March 3, 2009:

quote:

President Obama has sent a letter to his Russian counterpart that raises the prospect of the United States halting development of its missile defense program in Eastern Europe if Russia helps resolve the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program, senior administration officials said last night.

quote:

Meanwhile, Russian leaders have been infuriated by U.S. plans for a missile base in Poland and radar deployment in the Czech Republic, saying that U.S.-run weapons installations so close to its border represent a threat to its national security. The Bush administration, which initiated the plans, had waved off the Russian displeasure, saying the system would protect Russia as well as NATO allies from the threat posed by Iranian missiles.

The Obama administration, however, sent signals that it intends to smooth relations with Russia. Speaking at a defense conference in Munich last month, Vice President Biden said the administration wants to "press the reset button" with Russia.

Obviously, the reset button didn't work. Surprise, surprise.

There is a reason we have the stance on foreign countries that we do, the US hasn't been short sighted.

By starting from square one, we allowed this to happen IMO.

I think it would be a good step at this juncture.

But our Iranian relations are "better" so we might piss them off.

Also, I wouldn't mind closing some of our bases in Germany and seeing if the Poles wouldn't mind a little company in the form of the US Army.

Or maybe we could install the system, man it in conjunction with the Polish, cut bases in Germany and other parts of Europe and reduce our net presence and become less interventionist.

Novel idea.

If we pull back all our troops and become completely non-interventionist we'll be in another world war within 20 years.

It's what a lot of people on this board say.

Europe is free-riding from the US military. They are cutting their military spending by large percentages because they know we will step in and bear the majority of troops and monetary cost associated with defense.

We need to force them to step up and take some initiative as well.

Hell Putin would probably walk in and take it unopposed, like a Boss...

I know you're being facetious but that would be a clear violation of article V of NATO and would never be allowed

The question is, does Putin believe NATO would stick to it's treaty obligations?

I'm not sure what you're saying.

Article V of NATO basically says that any territorial breach or threat of such is considered an act against all other members of NATO.

Russian isn't a member of NATO. Poland is.

He said Putin would take it. You said that would be a violation of Article V. I questioned whether Putin cared about Article V.

My apologies I didn't read what you wrote well.

And yes, the US would go to war with Russia if they invaded Poland.

I think the debate would come if they entered some of the newer former USSR components that are new members of NATO

Poland didn't join until '99 and was a member of the USSR. But I do agree that the US would go to war over Poland. The question is does Putin believe we will.

I was refering to some of the newest NATO members that are mostly contiguous to Russia that joined in 2004:

Bulgaria
Estonia
Latvia
Lithuania
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia

Would the US go to war with Russia if they invaded Latvia?
