Legislator files bill that would fund Baton Rouge City Jail

A Baton Rouge legislator prefiled a bill Friday that would move the city-parish one step closer to getting a full-time misdemeanor jail.

If the law passes, law enforcement would be able to jail misdemeanor offenders, instead of writing them a summons, and it also would allow for those offenders’ names, fingerprints, photos and misdemeanor offenses to be entered into the criminal system, Moore said.

Moore said it would be up to the judges as to whether the fee is imposed.

I can't vote but I'd vote NO based on this sentence alone. Judges should enforce and not interpret imo.

Hell no.

1) The people aren't supposed to fear the police. This is just another money grab scheme by BRPD to avoid actually tackling real crime.

quote:

In August 2011, members of the Crime Fighting/Prevention Committee — created by the Metro Council — organized a wish list for capital projects, one of which was a misdemeanor jail that the committee estimated would cost about $2.2 million annually to run.

Moore and Brown estimated that to run the misdemeanor jail now, it would cost between $1 million to $1.5 million annually.

It's all about money. Instead of BRPD actually going after felonies, they want to go after the real bad guys, those with expired brake tags, and speeders.

I'm writing my senator and rep today asking them to vote against this bill.

I can see someone going to jail for multiple misdemeanor violations who doesn't pay or show up for court dates, but not for someone who might park once in a no-parking zone.

This sounds more like another money grab than a public safety issue.

Here is the legislator who pre-filed the bill, Rep. Alfred C. Williams, D-Baton Rouge.

Shouldn't be looking for ways to throw more of your citizens in jail.

NO way that guy has no misdemeanors in his life. His entire family will be called out soon.

typical politician trying to get his name on a bill no matter what it takes.

Louisiana does not need more prisoners. This is exactly why I vote No on any and all tax increases.

It is surprising when Democrats do something like this which will impact the black community more. However, somehow Repbulicans will be blamed.

Would it apply to St George?

If not, yet another reason to incorporate!

How many more police officers would Baton Rouge need to operate such a facility? Think of the time required to book a misdemeanor suspect into custody versus writing a summons. All of that time would be cops off the streets patrolling to handle the administrative requirements. The cost to operate estimates are probably only a fraction of the true costs as they focus on the jail alone, and not on police force operations.

Where are the funds for the public defenders going to come from? How long will someone be incarcerated before seeing a magistrate and bail is established?

Arrest for misdemeanors are a cost prohibitive thing for the city to do. If they arrest me the cost of my medicines per day exceed 100 dollar alone, closer to two hundred even with generics

The city just purchased a hospital and its ancillary buildings for 10 million dollars.

We could house the misdemeanor prisoners in an old patient room.

Why do we need a new jail for nonviolent misdemeanor perps?

Besides, we need cops on the streets, on the beat, and where they can be readily seen. Why hire cops to sit behind desk, run a lightweight jail, and take them off the streets???

We need to arrest people cost plus.

Charge them like you would if it were hotel room service or at a hospital.

If you need meds bring your own, or pay a stiff price. Food should be cost plus too.

I am pretty sure this is why the last chief got ran off by the mayor. He was forcing guys from behind the desk to the streets.
