The United States should hold off on punishing Russia until the European community is on board with a specific response to the growing crisis in Ukraine, the Senate's top Democrat said Monday.

In an interview, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Congress should let the situation play out for "a while" before trying to impose any new sanctions on Russia, which is dispatching military forces into Crimea - forcing the West to scramble for a response.

"The most important thing is for us - the United States - to make sure that we don't go off without the European community," Reid said Monday in the Capitol. "We have to work with them. Their interests are really paramount if we are going to do sanctions of some kind. We have to have them on board with us."

The comments are Reid's first since the crisis in Ukraine deepened over the weekend.

sounds like a good idea to me. Europeans should be leading the response. why should it be americas responsibility to police the world?

Agreed. And it's the Euros that are buying all the oil/natural gas from Russia THROUGH Crimea that is part of this issue.

The Budapest Memorandum

It says that the United States must unilaterally protect Ukraine from the Russians if they invade?

Ukraine gave up its nukes with assurances that the US, UK, and Russia would respect and protect its sovereignty.

And Obama made this promise in 2010
quote:

The U.S. recognized Ukraine’s unique contribution to nuclear disarmament and reconfirmed that the security assurances, recorded in the Budapest Memorandum with Ukraine of December 5, 1994, remain in effect.

I understand that but this is all the memorandum says as far as retribution:

Point 4 of the memorandum

quote:

Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
Seek United Nations Security Council action if nuclear weapons are used against Ukraine.

Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
Consult with one another if questions arise regarding these commitments.

The entirety of bullet point

The whole Budapest Memorandum

I read that whole thing, it isn't long but refers to other treaties that may require others to intervene but I doubt it.

How is the US doing this by calling a Russian invasion an "uncontested arrival"?

I'm not in any way saying that the Obama Administration is handling this properly at all.

But the United States isn't required to act unilaterally.

And the US isn't the one invading. To blame the US for not respecting Ukraine's Independence and sovereignty is a severe stretch.

America only economic sanctions has nothing to do with policing the world.

America only sanctions would accomplish nothing and would make us look weak.

If we are truly that weak that we can't get Europe to go along with sanctions against Russia for invading a sovereign nation, we're in bigger trouble than just appearing weak.

This is the same guy who was recently claiming that examples of Obamacare problems are lies. I don't give a flying frick what comes out of his mouth.
