If Putin invaded and took over the Baltic nations next...would anyone stop him?

Unlike Georgia and Ukraine, the Baltic nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are members of NATO and the EU. However, if Russian invaded and asserted control over these nations with force...would anyone do anything about it?
There are Russian ethnic minorities in each of these nations and political tensions are high. Each country has been bullied or threatened by Putin before. He could use his same rationale that the Russian-speaking people in these nations are being persecuted/threatened and therefore must protect them. This is essentially the same rationale Hitler used to invade the Sudetenland in the former Czechoslovakia prior to WWII.
Would the US and European leaders do anything other than issue statements of rhetoric and engage in handwringing?

Probably not. I don't see the USA or anybody else mobilizing for war against Russia for any reason whatsoever, no matter what Putin does.
The USA is sick of war and will have no more of it.

quote:No. But Barack Hussein Obama and John Kerry would both be very gravely concerned.
.would anyone stop him?
Not just 'gravely concerned' but VERY gravely concerned.

If you consider stopping him issuing a stern letter then yes

Well, being as how Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are all members of NATO, then there would be pretty swift and harsh consequences for anyone attacking them.
Anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves. And anyone who actually thinks Putin is going to even flirt with a move towards the Baltic states is just as delusional.

Putin is very aware of this, which makes him much more concerning.

NATO Article 5 says an attack on one member is an attack on all members.
If Russia were to invade a NATO country, the military reaction would be swift. If Ukraine were a full member of NATO, European and American armed forces would probably already be mobilizing.
Article 5 was invoked after 9/11 which led to the NATO led invasion of Afghanistan under the ISAF.

Hell, if Ukraine were a NATO member, Putin wouldn't even think to mobilize forces there.

Treaties aren't unbreakable. I don't think we got to war over the baltics.

Exactly.

Doubt it, but I don't think Putin will make such an attempt.

I'm pretty confident we would be in a conflict if a NATO country were invaded.

Well sure, but I don't know why we'd even flirt with breaking the North Atlantic Treaty. It's one of the many ways we're able to assert military dominance over the Western world. Allowing a NATO member to be attacked completely undermines the very idea of collective defense, which was the purpose of the treaty in the first place.

Not to mention the Baltic countries would not have any pro Russia rallies, staged or not, like in Crimea. They would immediately fight back, requiring an immediate NATO response.

If a NATO country is invaded we are going to war with Russia. End of story.

So you really think Obama, Hollande, Cameron, Merkel, et al would send troops to face off with the Russians and tell Putin to get out or we would kick him out?
Really?
Incidentally and peripherally to the issue but nevertheless still noteworthy...during the Iraq War, Turkey (a NATO member) requested military assistance and defensive measures (primarily in the form of Patriot batteries) to defend against the stated threat of Hussein firing missiles into Turkey and NATO said no, you are on your own.

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about.

Anybody that says Nato wouldn't go to war over the Balkans doesn't know what they are talking about.
