A soldier who hid in her car to avoid saluting the flag — and then flaunted it on Instagram — is the latest service member to come under attack via social media and be accused of dishonoring her service.

Pfc. Tariqka Sheffey, whose Instagram handle is “sheffeynation,” posted a selfie with a caption that reads:

“This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don’t have to salute the 1700 flag, KEEP ALL YOUR ‘THATS SO DISRESPECTFUL/HOWRUDE/ETC.’ COMMENTS TO YOURSELF cuz, right now, IDGAFFFF.”

The image was distributed via Facebook and also sent to Army Times. Angry service members, Gold Star mothers and spouses have called for the soldier’s removal from service.

“Any soldier who refuses to salute the flag is in the military for the wrong reason, and should be removed by dishonorable discharge with loss of all benefits,” one Facebook commenter said. “If they won’t salute it, they damn sure won’t fight for it.”

Sheffey responded with a video on Instagram on Tuesday and expressed regret. But she stopped short of apologizing for her actions:

“I seriously just want to say thank you to everybody who stood up to me today, like seriously. That s— to me was not that serious. I am not a disrespectful soldier and I really appreciate you all.”

This marks the third time in less than two weeks in which a photo of service members has sparked controversy on social media. Several National Guard members have been suspended from funeral honors detail in light of a photo showing them comically posing around a flag-draped casket during training. An investigation is ongoing.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Cherish Byers is also the subject of an investigation, after a three-year-old photo of her tongue-kissing a Prisoner of War-Missing in Action symbol went viral.

We do live in a free country. I think it's blatant attention whoring bullshite that she did this, but I stand by her right to do it. I don't have to like it.

Maybe it was just one of those days that a girl goes through, where she's angry inside, doesn't want to take out on you

Do you understand the concept of an oath of service? This action is certainly punishable under the UCMJ

I get it. She has to face the consequences and all that. Would I do it? Hell no, because I'm not retarded.

I don't have a strong opinion on this but you can't use the "it's a free country" excuse when you are in the service. Different rules apply when you are not a civilian.

I'm a vet I understand the oath. Ducking into a car so that you don't have to stand at attention and salute the flag in the middle of the sidewalk on a military base is not a violation of the UCMJ. It's lazy... plain and simple.

Yeah, I understand that. What baffles me more than her not following protocol is being so dumb as to post it to Instagram. Why are people so dumb?

Please, anyone who has ever served, from flag officer to E1, has done this. Hell, you'd see half of some commands waiting just inside prior to colors to ensure they weren't caught up

This is what happens when you recruit people who have no options in life by offering them job security and training after coupled with relatively low recruiting standards. They're just in it for the paycheck.

Not saying this is the whole Army, but they're particularly bad about this because of the way they recruit. Hopefully, this won't be a problem if they go through with the serious troop reductions that they're talking about. Then, maybe they'll be able to recruit the people who actually want to serve.

I'd be stoked to have to serve with her....

If she doesn't take the flag that represents her country seriously, why on earth would we expect her to take anything she does in the military seriously? Hell, why is she even there if that's the case?

Truth!!

People making a big deal of this never served and have no idea what they're talking about.

Guarantee that refusing to salute is covered somewhere in the UCMJ. Will she get punished? No, everyone does it. Is she a total retard for posting it on social media? Yes, yes she is.

to me, it's not waiting in the car, it's her arrogance in putting her actions on social media...

what military career she had is finished...
