Hey nerds: What's the best Tolkien book that isn't LOTR or The Hobbit?

I just finished The Hobbit (for the first time) and Lord of the Rings (for the second time) and have The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin, but I'm not sure which one to read next.
What say you OT? Which of those two should I read next, or should I go get something else to read by Tolkien?
Thanks

I didn't know he had produced any other works

Good chance you won't like his other works which read like an encyclopedia.

I can almost guarantee you it's not The Silmarillon

Yeah, I got bored quickly on both of them.

Read the Silmarillion and that's pretty much it.

Considering that neither are actual novels written by Tolkien and instead written by his son and based off of his notes, yeah, they won't be like LOTR or The Hobbit. Still, The Silmarillion has a lot of interesting history. I would think most would say that's where you should go next if you are wanting more.

Silmarilion is about as interesting to read from cover to cover as the bible.
It encompasses the entire history of middle earth going all the way back to the entity that created it. How elves, dwarves, and men came to be...etc etc.
Every page brings a laundry list of new names of either people or places, or both. By the time you make it to the second page, you've already forgotten who the guy mentioned on the previous page is/was.
Sorry, my nerd is showing.

Just skip and start reading Robert Jordan's "Eye of the World" series. It is about 13 900 page books and will keep you busy a while.

Man this thread is really deflating my enthusiasm for reading any of these books
I think I might just go back to reading old sci-fi books now

Oh yeah, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson might be up your alley as well.
