US Air Force begins transitioning BlackBerry devices to iPhones

The United States Air Force is replacing 5000 legacy BlackBerry smartphones with Apple's iPhone, and eventually all of their BlackBerry users will have to make the changeover. The announcement, reported by Defense News, comes as the future of BlackBerry within the Department of Defense is debated, with the chips seeming to fall on the side of transitioning away from a network supporting a mish-mash of BlackBerry 6 and 7 devices to a mix of modern devices — though apparently without BlackBerry 10 in that mix. The situation has changed dramatically since this time last year, when the Department of Defense was adamant they weren't dropping BlackBerry.
Brigadier General Kevin Wooten, the communications director for Air Force Space Command (which manages the Air Force's IT infrastructure), said that "in order to keep costs down and save on network resources, BlackBerrys will be turned in and shut off once the user is transitioned to an iOS device." Additionally, anybody who hopes to activate a new BlackBerry on the Air Force network will require approval from the Air Force Space Command. The general that's attached to his BlackBerry is going to have to write an awfully compelling memo justifying why he should get a new one.

Wow....I always thought security and the trust of the government was the one thing BB had going for it. They're toast for sure now. Better start selling off those patents.

And they will stop this process soon and transition to the windows phone just like my company is doing.

It's easier to use their iPhones to pilot drones.
There's an app for that!

Why are you so sure? Are you in/related to government?
My company is fairly large and all of our company phones have been iphones for a couple of years now after we got rid of Blackberry.

I'm curious as well. My employer is BYOD and I don't think they even support windows phone yet.
iPhones are easy to secure and less susceptible to malware/hacking than an android device (for example) and apparently just as good as BB, but I don't know a lot about the OS on windows phones.

I work for Dept of Interior. We switched over from Blackberry to iPhone about a year ago when we switched email systems. Apparently Blackberry could not handle security of our new email system which is Google based. Not 100% sure but that is what I was told.

Because the office programs don't work flawlessly across platforms. You lose functionality. If my company gave me the Surface tablet with a docking station, I wouldn't even need a work phone.

But we're taking about phones...specifically an iPhone vs a windows phone. Will the windows phone make you that much more productive if you already have a laptop running windows?

Yeah I'm just taking the leap to where I'll be in 5 years. Why do I need a phone?

Yes. Today we have to firewall the crap out of things running through iPhone. It's a pain in the arse sending attachment, making changes to documents, uploading to shared internal sites, etc. It could be much better. I think the controls from within my IT group go overboard sometimes but I'd rather not lose all my data

You probably won't need one, unless you make a lot of calls. Personally, I like a phone because it can fit in my pocket and the ability to answer and email/message with one hand is kinda nice. I could be more productive with a tablet but I wouldn't be as accessible/responsive with one.

I agree with this. I've been an iPhone user since 2007 and file management is embarrassing compared to a lot of other devices. Why I can't attach a file to an email in the native email app, I have no idea.
I get around this using apps like Dropbox and docs to go, but this really should be built into iOS.
I'm guessing windows phones have a file system similar to android devices. That would be nice to have on the iPhone but you don't even have to go that far. Just create an documents app like the photos app and allow me to access it with other apps. Simple and done.
End rant

Windows phone gives them the control over the device and restriction of apps like they had with the blackberry. Apple has made great improvement in the area of back end security, but the companies want it on both ends.
