There's various stories at this link, but one part specifically caught my eye.
quote:

State Sen. Elbert Guillory, one of two candidates running to be Louisiana's next lieutenant governor, said his campaign finance report filed this week included "erroneous" deposits meant to end up in his law office's accounts.

"Some law office money was deposited in the campaign account," Guillory said Thursday. "We are going over the campaign finance reports right now, my accountant and I, to see exactly what happened."

Guillory, who would not detail which deposits were made in error, said he was preparing an amended report.

Now I've never been really involved in campaign financing, so maybe this boo boo isn't all that uncommon? Maybe Politiceaux can chime in on how this happens? Should such a mistake raise a red flag?

To be honest, I really doubt there was anything intentionally done incorrectly. I'd guess that he probably has a secretary making deposits and such, which is foolish. As a lawyer, I take the time to handle all of that stuff for my firm personally - it's a pain in the arse but a lot of lawyers get in trouble with the bar for honest mistakes with that stuff. I have several accounts that each come with different restrictions. I just won't risk it.

Campaign reporting requirements are a huge pain in the arse. I understand the reason for it but I can also tell you that I've been involved when lots of campaigns have gotten pestering letters from ethics. I've yet to be personally involved in a single one out of many campaigns that was intentionally trying to hide anything.

Why can't you deposit money from your own private business into your own campaign account?

If his law practice does similar to some other offices I deal with representing mineral and surface owners, maybe this office account holds monies that are eventually supposed to be distributed to clients?

It's amazing how so few lawyers actually know something about how to run a business-which is what a law firm is.. A big firm in NOLA went down a few years ago because the office manager embezzled nearly all their funds. They were too lazy to keep an eye on what was going on in their back office, and too cheap to hire someone to do it for them.

One certainly can do that but, if I understand correctly, these were checks made out to him for attorney fees, not campaign contributions.

Yep, I completely agree.
