I've been using Houzz to get some really great ideas for a custom home. I need help figuring out some layout ideas before I go to someone who can draw the plans. Any good resource sites for this?

You can research online and get basic ideas or check out the local production builders, find a floor plan you like and take one of their floor plan brochures. That should get you started.

Houzz is great for ideas. We always tell clients to write down what you want/like and have to have in a house. Room sizes, and specialties like laundry connecting to master closet or a gun room hidden under the stairs. Stuff like that. And trust the architect to put it all together within your sqft range. The architect also should have some ideas based off your wants and needs.

I'm extremely happy with my floor plan. 3224 sf heated and cooled, 2 bedrooms 2 baths, great room, dinning room and full kitchen on one end. 1 bed room, efficiency kitchen, small dinning room and man cave and bathroom on the other end.

It's great when family and guest come to stay and sublime all other times. Wife watches the crying channels and entertains on her side, I watch Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and Maverick and the games on my side.

When we designed ours a few years ago we got one of those computer programs that lets you design it using your measurements, and fill it with furniture, wall colors, etc. and then do a 3-D walk through. It was VERY helpful in giving us an idea of how it would actually look and feel after construction--would highly recommend.
