My wife is getting a new car and she wants to get an overhead car video system installed in the car. Is anyone familiar with places that do the installations and have recommendations on brands, stores that do the installs, etc? I am in Houston by the way. I see a lot of different options on places like Crutchfield and Amazon, but wasn't sure if places would do installations with equipment I brought in from somewhere else. Just seeing if anyone had gotten this done and had any recommendations.
Thanks

Thanks. I don't see that they sell any of the equipment in the store. I guess that means they wouldn't mind if I brought in my own equipment. Is $199 a good price? Not sure if other places might be cheaper if I buy the equipment through their store. Any ideas?

I don't have any recommendations in Houston, but you shouldn't run into a problem anywhere just because you didn't buy the equipment from them. Some places might give you a better price on the install if you buy from them though.

Crutchfield is a great catalog, I haven't used them in awhile so I can't tell you how their prices compare. What brands are you looking at?

I wouldn't go to a Best Buy or even a Mobile One (I think they're in Houston too). You want a smaller shop that specializes in that type of thing, but be prepared to pay for it. If a place tells you they can do it that day, that probably isn't where you wanna go. You should have to make an appointment, it shows they have a lot of business and that's obviously a good sign.

Also, are you coming off of a screen in the dash that came with the car or do you have an aftermarket head unit?

I really hadn't looked at brands yet. Most of the options on Crutchfield are Audiovox. Not too much experience with them as a brand.

I was planning on coming off the head unit that comes with the car. It's a 2014 Highlander XLE if that makes a difference. It has an 8 inch navigation screen already built in so I assume it has the functionality to handle the sound if the over-head video system has the DVD player built into it. I would have gone with the DVD system in the car, but it was $2K which seemed a little pricey too me.

You're looking at just screens so I can't really comment. If you were getting a head unit screen I could tell you what brands are the best.

You shouldn't have any problems as far as audio, but keep in mind that most cars with existing navi systems and whatnot won't let you play video unless the car is in P. There are ways around it but some big corporate places won't do it. Just make sure before you choose a place that it's understood you will get audio and video while driving and that the price they quote you is the price you'll pay.

Ok. Thanks. I see that there is a Car Toys not far from me. I may go check them out and see what they have to offer.
