@MLS: NEWS: Major League Soccer purchases Chivas USA

quote:

NEW YORK (February 20, 2014) – Major League Soccer today announced it has purchased Chivas USA from Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes. Effective immediately, MLS will assume responsibility for operating the club. MLS will appoint an experienced sports executive shortly to serve as the president of Chivas USA during this interim period. Head coach Wilmer Cabrera, who joined the club January 9, will continue in his position and report to the new president.

quote:

The club will play as Chivas USA during the 2014 MLS season and will be rebranded with a new team name and logo in connection with the sale to a new owner.

quote:

In the coming months, the league will resell the club to a new ownership group that will be committed to building a new stadium and keeping the team in Los Angeles. The league has had initial discussions with a number of very qualified potential owners and intends to finalize an agreement with a new group sometime this year.

This sort of thing reflects poorly on the league.

Good news, but by the end of the season I wonder what happens to them. I say move it to a market that needs a team.

Chivas getting a new owner would be positive. The league buying them instead/before that happens makes it look like a Mickey Mouse organisation.

Because Vegara is an asswipe and would run the team into the ground and probably fold them if he was trying to do what MLS is going to step in and do.

Also, the NHL and NBA has done it in the last 5 years.

Those are hardly "Micky mouse organizations"

The NHL is definitely a Mickey Mouse organisation. The NBA is debatable.

Giving them a club in the first place reflected bad for the league.

MLB bought the Expos and moved them to DC before selling.

Different league, but it worked out okay for the Pelicans.

Sorry bro. It's MLS. it's as minor league as it gets. They will never be a big boy league. Everything they ever do is terrible

Mickey Mouse action to take care of a Mickey Mouse club. MLS doesn't have the option of letting them fade into obscurity like Portsmouth and some Scottish club named Randers, or something.

Exactly. The MLS needs to preserve the franchises it has, even if that means running that shite show for a year until a proper owner steps in.

They are currently looking for owners "committed to keeping the franchise in LA" so that is interesting. I was hoping they would relocate, but I guess the rivalry dynamic in LA is just too strong of a pull for them to give up on.
