Is it worth it? If so, any recommendations in the BR area. Would a design-build firm be a better way to go? I'm definitely not OT rich, but I'll be retiring from the military and will be doing this long distance. Thx.

I'd go with either Ted Mosby or Art Vandelay

Too narrowly focused. Should have been a city planner.

Too narrowly focused? He was an architect and ran a very successful import/export business

Mosbius Designs was a failure, go with Art.

Should focus more on the exporting and save his relationship.

Didn't he dabble in latex as well? Ran his office out of an apartment I believe, Vandalay Industries.

Don't forget about his latex business. He had a wide array of interests.

What are you wanting to build? A residence or a commercial structure? If the former, unless you're building a mansion, there are lots of plans out there. If the latter, I'd probably go with an architect if it's anything more than a box design.

A good plan saves money

It's worth while hiring a professional depending on what it you're trying to do.

It costs nothing for a consultation... interview a couple and go from there

Residential. It's a potential forever house and we have specific tastes and the land has unique water views. I've found some decent plans online but nothing perfect.

Now back to Seinfeld.

Buy a plan that is close and have a DRAFTSMAN make needed changes. You don't want to pay what an architect costs and, frankly, for a residential structure you don't need one. For that matter, most changes (i.e. I want a big window here) can be made by a builder on the fly if he is worth half a crap.

Find yourself a good Architect with a solid track record for working designs. Often, architects will design stuff that looks really cool, but isn't very practical (I'm looking at you Trey Trahan!). Consulting an Interior Designer (NOT to be confused with sn interior decorator) and a couple reputable experienced contractors is also a good idea, unless any of them happens to be an Anti-Dentite, a low talker, or has manhands.
