Freak Defense

I wonder if JJ would be amenable to bringing Dale or even Tex Winter (if he's up to it) in as a part time assistant to teach next year's team the Freak Defense?
Dale was never much of an X and O kind of guy, and I dont know how well this gimmick D would translate to today's CBB game. But his teams did have success with this defensive scheme. And CJJ needs to do SOMETHING defensively.

Dale was the king in defense!

I'm starting a petition to ban use of the term "Freak" regarding LSU football.

Tex is 91, suffered a stroke a couple of years ago that affected his speech, and is reportedly in failing health otherwise. I doubt he is "up to it"

I'm sorry to hear that about Tex. I knew he was getting pretty advanced in age, hence the "if he's up to it".
How about Abernathy? Any word on what he's doing now? He was always the brains behind those teams of Dale's anyway.

fortunately for Dale not much defense was played in that era...the players shorts were too tight to get in the low crouching position that is crucial for feet movement.

That's a different thread... and sport.
LSU basketball used to run what Dale Brown called his "freak" defense. I used to consider it more of a diamond and one, but if you read through this old article:

... it discusses it a little differently. Here's the relevant part, I think:
quote:
The defense constantly shifted like a chameleon, depending on whether LSU had just scored and which area of the forecourt the opponent chose to attack. Wilson said perplexed opponents often couldn't tell if LSU was playing man or zone, diamond-and-one or triangle-and-two.

I'm not really sure if you realize that I was joking.

It was controlled chaos. But there was apparently method to the madness, because it worked.
