OT sales folk: We all think we could bring all of our customers with us to new job. But my experience tells me, all things being equal in terms of products/service, it is probably less than 50%. What does the MB think?

A general rule of thumb, dependent upon the product you're trying to sell.

Out of 10 sales calls, 3 will be mildly interested and out of those 3, 1 will be very interested that you will have the opportunity to do business with.

what business are you in? my rule of thumb is about 10%, but it really depends on what you're selling.

If you've done your job correctly at your current company (really locked them in), then it's extremely hard and painful for them to move just to follow you.

I am not moving, just a follow up post to the gent that was thinking he was taking all his customers with him. I tend to agree with you. Most of my/our customers are making more money than they ever dreamed and most don't want to upset the apple cart no matter how much they like me/current company and products.

I am in the landscape goods coating business.ie colored mulches, turf spray, etc

I left my first company (a value added reseller of IT equipment, like a mom and pop CDW) and went to work in a completely different industry. About 8 months into the new job, some former colleagues had opened up their own mom and pop selling IT equipment. I agreed to do some 1099 work for them, commission only, and successfully brought over around 75% of my targeted former clients. I did not attempt to bring over all my customers, just the big ones, but it was pretty easy based off of the relationship we had, even if we hadn't spoken to each other in almost a year.

I think it depends on the industry and your relationship with past clients, but 40-50% is probably a more realistic assumption.
