LSU coach Paul Mainieri said what travel programs hurt are the community little league programs where all kids played and were taught the game. He said when he was growing up, the leagues were sponsored by local community businesses.
Mainieri agrees that travel ball is bad for America

I finally agree with him on something.

The Cubans don't have travel ball and are pretty good at baseball.
Communism makes better baseball players than capitalism.

What they've done (at the Youth Academy) is nothing short of sensational. I've been over there on several occasions for clinics. They have kids coming from everywhere. I really believe it could be the single best thing that has ever happened to this city.

I saw "broke ****" in reference to children

Well, I just meant they were dirt poor. Poor choice of words I guess. I thought it was a CSB tho.

It's really upsetting to see my towns local Park & Rec struggle the way it does. When I was a kid, the entire area was swarming with people for the whole weekend..now there's 3 teams per age group (if that).
Travel ball has completely killed community baseball.

It was. Cuba has some of the best players in the world. They love it and it's all they do. Every MLB team has multiple scouts just for the island. Much like the Dominican Rep.

It was pretty cool watching 8 year olds turning 2 with no shows on.

I don't believe "travel baseball" is bad, but the programs where all you have to do is pay and you're on the team, those are not good.
My playground has a rec league where 8-10 teams play each other, and then there is one travel team for those players that have more talent. They make the team based on their talent and maturity.
Kids should play with at the appropriate level. A less talented athlete would not enjoy a higher competitive team, it could lead to burnout. Likewise, a talented athlete may not reach his/her potential by playing down.
There is an academy nearby that has around 20 kids on the "team" but only 12 or 13 make the team to play in the tournament that week, but they all pay the same amount to be on the team for the summer. Terrible!
I rambled, but I wanted to say that not all travel ball is bad, but the overall culture certainly isn't going in the right direction.
