Congrats Republicans...

quote:

UPDATE (2/11/2014 12:13 PM): Speaker John Boehner will bring a clean debt ceiling bill to the floor today, marking the end of an era in which House Republicans sought spending cuts and reforms in equal or greater amount to the increase in the debt ceiling.

President Obama and congressional Democrats had said they were opposed to even discussing spending cuts in the context of the debt ceiling. But Republicans couldn't even come together with their own plan.

atta boy Boehner, rather than use your leverage to get the other party to compromise, just roll over on your back and show them your belly from the start!

Yes, let's shut down the government, accomplish nothing, and toss away the chance to take the Senate.

That is a much better plan.

March 2011: “We have to pass this CR that cuts no spending, can’t die on this hill, just wait for the debt ceiling fight, that is when we will have the leverage”

July 2011: “We have to raise the debt ceiling, can’t die on this hill. Wait until the 2012 elections, we will win then fight for conservative principles”

December 2012: “We have to pass these tax increases. We can’t die on this hill, we need to pick our battles. Don’t worry, we will fight down the line on the next debt ceiling”

October 2013: “We have to pass this crap budget and not fight to defund Obamacare. This isn’t the hill to die on. We will get them, don’t worry”

Decmeber 2013: “We need to go ahead and pass this Paul Ryan budget. Don’t fight it, just accept it. We can’t die on this hill. We can’t ruin the chances of taking the senate.”

WASHINGTON – In the first closed-door meeting of the Republican majority in the new Congress, newly reelected House Speaker John A. Boehner on Friday promised a robust fight with President Obama to cut spending in exchange for raising the nation’s debt limit.

The Ohio Republican doubled-down on his insistence that there must be at least a dollar-per-dollar match between spending reductions and continued borrowing.

What good is the GOP taking the senate if the same old leadership, career politicians and RINOs are still there?

The man is a fricking coward... He doesn't stand for anything.

I swore off voting for a Republican at anything less than the Presidential level 2yrs ago after he caved to Obama after puffing out his chest. The last 2 years of Republican backing of the man has only strengthened my conviction

Under the current GOP house, we have gotten tax increases, multiple debt ceiling increases, budgets that increase spending, omnibus spending bills, corporate welfare farm bills, all pushed over the finish line by Republicans.

Also no serious effort at defunding or repealing Obamacare, and now they are talking amnesty.

But don't worry, we have to hold our nose and accept all the crap sandwiches, so this same group can take the senate, and when they do so, THEN they will fight for conservative principles and limited government

Don't be such a defeatist. All we need to do is continue to eat the crap the GOP is spoonfeeding us, telling us we have to eat it for the good of the party, so we don't do anything to disrupt their chances of a senate takeover in November.

THEN, when that happens, THEN they will fight for limited government and conservative principles, and stop playing dealmaker with the dems or outright going along with them

Watching the Republicans is painful. They don't seem to have a plan and they are woefully inept. It reminds me of January 9, 2011 all over again. The difference is I love my Tigers. I'm not loyal at all to a political party that has betrayed me one too many times in regards to standing up for fiscal responsibility.

everybody already knows this, but did you know that auctioneers make bad check out clerks?

Boehner simply wants to be the wife of Obama and he understands that playing hard to get is no longer the means to accomplish that.

Obviously...

I obviously don't understand how it feels to be as fricking weak and spineless as the face of the Republican Party in DC.

One of the reasons I like about conservatives is our (usual) ability to notice unintended consquences: from raising taxes hurting the economy to welfare programs causing dependence.

But somehow a large chunk of conservatives cannot even see the unintended consequences of their own actions.

Let's play through this shall we?
1. Boehner insists on some additional measure as part of the debt ceiling being raised.
2. The Senate and Obama say "screw you."
3. Republicans get blamed. Hurts future electoral chances.
4. Republicans cave. Caving makes them look week, hurts electoral chances even more.

End of the day, whatever it is we are fighting for doesn't happen, and Rs take it on the chin. If you cannot win the game, DON'T PLAY IT!

But wait, your fantasy-addled mind thinks- "what if we never ever ever cave!" It never happens. No shutdown has worked out for the repubs.

"But that's because they cave!" So what? Shut down government until they 2014 midterm? Then Rs lose the house and Obama can essentially do what he wants. But at least the 40-50 republicans left will be super-duper ideologically pure! That will solve everything!!!!!!

Pick your battles. Repubs can't win this one. They can will the election. That means they will have more leverage to choose even more battles in the future, not the least of which would be senate confirmations like the supreme court.

We have been told this the last 100 battles that have come up on Capitol Hill. It's always a hill not to die on. The message is always to live to fight another day.

When will that "another day" come? If they haven't fought the last 100 battles, what makes you think they will fight in the future? What have they done to show that they will fight if they do win control of the senate?

If that does happen, I guarantee you the new excuse for caving will be "We can't jeopardize the chances of winning the White House in 2016". And if somehow post 2016 the GOP holds the house, senate, and White House, the new excuse will be "We can't risk losing our majority in 2018".
