Ok, here goes, had squirrels in walls, wife got freaked out and made me drill quarter sized hole in wall and drop about 10 packs of decon, now my study ( where I hide from my family and live amongst my sports memorabilia) smells like low tide at an ole miss sorority house (sorry)... How can I get rid of smell? To get to it I would have to cut big hole through thick boards...any advice, how long does smell last?

If there's a dead animal in there you have to get it out. If you don't, it will decay and attract even worse shite.

The smell may go away after awhile but it'll come back to bite you in the arse.

You have dead animals in your walls man. the only way to get rid of the smell is to get rid of the animals.

Lies. Had rats die in the wall at my parents house all the time when I was a kid. Was not about to rip out sheetrock for those little shits. I give it a week or 2. Buy some glade.

I had this same problem in the attic of my old office. We were right next to a bagel shop and the owners must have put out some rat poison that a squirrel ate.

The squirrel must have picked my attic to die in and it smelled awful. I called every exterminator in BR and none would come out for a dead animal, ironically the businesses whose mission it is to kill varmits want nothing to do with the dead ones.

I had to bribe my routine bug man to come out on off hours and remove the dead animal and fumigate the attic to get rid of the smell. It was the best $100 I ever spent.

Try peppermint oil. It will help with the smell.

Pest store, there's a spray you shoot down the wall. Kills smell and speeds up decomp.

Ask a friend to bring their cat over.

Let it wander around and get comfortable at your place.

The cat will sniff out the smell and pin point where you need to check into.

Its most likely a small mouse since your walls have top plates a squirrel won't be able to fit through.

Could also just need to reseal your commode with a new wax ring.

What happens is the smell goes away, and then the maggots start to grow. After a while the maggots turn into giant disgusting flies that will be in your house. Really need to get the carcass out of there and have the exterminator fill the hole that it cam through.

Had this happen at a house I rented way back. It just gets worse and takes 2 months for the smell to go away. Nothing you do will mask the smell. It was so bad, we could smell it from outside

Get it out of the wall ASAP. Believe me when I say it, nothing will be able to mask the smell

Traps are your friend. If you use poison you're asking for this.

Had this happen to me. Put out some packs of coffee grounds (fresh, not brewed) to absorb the smell. Took care of it in no time.
