The wife and I are looking at getting another dog within the next year or so, specifically a purebred puppy to grow up with son. He's not yet two, but loves to play with her mom's doberman. The wife has two toy dogs that are not smart or social and just generally are shitty dogs.

The wife googled to get suggestions about what dogs are good for little boys, and has come up with recommendations. I told her that none of them are dogs that I would have wanted to be friends with as a young boy. I told her that little boys would want a dog from a totally different list of breeds.

So for the men, what kind of dogs did you have as a boy, and what dog breeds would you have wanted to be "your dog" as a boy?

Just get a mutt. Your son doesn't care about some purebred show dog.

Border Collie or yellow lab.

But I love Dobermans, and they are great family pets. They are extremely smart, loyal and protective.

Top 5 smartest breed.

He would love it.

If you have in your mind to get a big dog, I would wait till your son is a little older, at two the big dog will intimidate your son even if only meaning to play with him

When your son gets a little bigger it would be hard to beat a lab

Just get a lab.

Smart, loyal, long life expectancy and little aggression.

Make sure whatever breed it is that it has a long life expectancy. You don't want to deal with a dead dog when your son is still young

Scruffy always had mutts, but some good purebreds for kids are labs, golden retrievers, and beagles.

Depends on the circumstances. Labs need room, and someone who's going to spend some time with them. If you're not willing or able to provide that, look elsewhere.

A beagle is a good starter dog.
