This weekend they're counting down the top 40 hits from this week in 1983. See if you can guess what the #1 song was.

Here's a clue on the #1 song. It is a place. Any more specific than that would give it away.

If it's not Land Down Under I'd guess maybe Africa by toto. Or maybe that was late 82.

Rio never made it to No. 1.

I have tons of useless 80's knowledge.

ding ding.....we have a winner. Extra credit goes for guessing the #2 song as well

Top 3 songs this week (early February) in 1983 were:

1) Toto - Africa

2) Men at Work - Down Under

3) Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing

Yep. It shows you the quality of depth of 80s music when you have 3 iconic songs at the top of a single chart. Much of the decade was that way. Marvin Gaye was brilliant and was tragically killed about a year after this song. Toto was highly underrated imho. Great musicians with arguably the most underrated drummer in rock. Men at Work had some great songs too.

I thought AFRICA, but then I thought no way would that have made it to #1, but clearly 1984 and 1985 erased a lot of what was good in 1983.

I was kidding about Rio. I didn't even think that would have been the best-selling single of that album...but then again, it was no lower than #2 if at all.

I'm not sure what you mean about 1984 and 1985. I think those years were even better than 1983. There are better songs from that era but all 3 of those songs have stood the test of time and they were all better than just about any #1 song you'd hear nowadays.
