How much of the various Latin American' countries populations are genetically European? Obviously it varies hugely from country to country, so which ones have more of a true Spanish/Portuguese legacy beyond language? Which countries are moreso than others?

I also acknowledge there are various huge influences such as German & Italian in places like Argentina.... And there's the obvious African influence especially in Brazil. I guess I'm just curious how the Europeans changed what we think of as a Latin American/Hispanic compared to what the first settlers would have found.

Obviously, North America was more like a windshield wiper of Europeans that just sent the natives packing and plopped down a whole bunch of white folks, with isolated intermingling.

I can remember watching Uruguay vs France in the last World Cup and realizing I resembled the Uruguayan players more than the French players even though I have a Cajun last name.

I would assume Uruguay is one of those countries with more of a Spanish/Italian influence.

I dated a girl in college who was a Mexican citizen. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. The upper classes are almost entirely of European descent. The lower classes, mostly mixed. Argentina almost completely wiped out their Indian population, so there are few of mixed race there. About a third of the Argentine population is of Italian descent, IIRC.

This is true. I had an exchange student in high school that was from Mexico and I have never seen someone hate a group as much as he hated the "indios". It was all he would talk about every day and I used to laugh my arse off when he would get going.

The Southern Cone has a lot of European influence. Buenos Aires is proud of being the "Paris of South America." Brazilians in the south tend to be whiter and wealthier than the other regions in Brazil.

Overall there's a lot of physical characteristics stemming from native populations in Central America and Central/Northern parts of South America. Outside of the southern region, Brazil and the Caribbean of course have greater African influences.

It is kinda true that the "elite" or ruling class tends to be whiter in Latin America, and pretty much across the board. It was weird attending a conference of Mexican professors who lectured on the economic and political struggles of "Mexico," when all these professors were white and most of the people they represent are mestizo.

It was mostly the plague that sent them packing. They fought off the vikings twice before whitey "settled".

Just like in North America, most of the native Indians were killed by disease or conquest. If you want actual details you should check out the CIA World Fact Book. They have ethnic breakdowns for every country. Mexico for instance breaks down as:

quote:

mestizo (Amerindian-Spanish) 60%, Amerindian or predominantly Amerindian 30%, white 9%, other 1%

Argentina by contrast breaks down as:

quote:

white (mostly Spanish and Italian) 97%, mestizo (mixed white and Amerindian ancestry), Amerindian, or other non-white groups 3%

Definitely admit it was a combination of things, particularly disease, but by the 1800s there were still Native Americans throughout the states and we literally sent them packing and went to war against them.

Funny enough my classmate had brown skin, black hair, and certainly looked like an indian to me but he hated them. I also have met a few people from Brazil and other countries down South that look black to me but they constantly talk about how much they hate blacks, that is not the term they use. South and Central America are strange places.

it varies,
like the OP stated places like Uruguay, chile , Argentina have german /italian influence.

places in the caribbean like dominicana, cuba and puerto rico have a lot of african influence in their population.

Something curious about my home country is that there is also a lot of palestinian influence. These folks escaped the conflicts in that region around WWI and came to Honduras where they became entrepeneurs and are actually a very wealthy demographic. They are actually considered the ruling class. The funny thing is they are not muslims but catholics. In my country, they are referred to as "turcos".
Oh..and these "turca" laaaadies are usually smoking hot.

We just spent a few days in Ruidoso, NM and about 75% of the license plates in the ski area parking lot were from Chihuahua, Mexico...later found out it was the Constitution Day holiday and they are less than 5 hours away.

90% of them appeared to be of European descent - almost all of them seemed to be bilingual. They also had mostly nice vehicles and high end (non-rental) ski/snowboard gear.

There is a similar such population of Catholic Lebanese citizens in the Lafayette area that migrated to Louisiana during that same time period. Similar results

A good bit. Native Americans in Latin America are very much the minority. The majority is of mixed decent but there are sizable portions of the population with are as European as anyone in North America.
