Took her out a 4:30 like I usually do and she came back to the back door dragging her back end. There is snow and ice outside, so she had to of slipped. She is resting comfortably on her bed. She just can not stand on her back end. She won't put weight on it.

Going to the vet for X-rays. I hope we don't have to put her down.

Thanks for letting me to vent my sadness.

I am sorry to hear it. It has to be something worse than a fall. She didn't get in the road did she?

We think it is spinal. She was going to the bathroom and her paw slid from under her. We are taking her in at 11 to the vet. Does not seem to have any deformity in the bones. Hoping she strained her hip.

X-rays revealed she has a large arthritic mass covering her spine. It is putting pressure on her nerves and causing loss of function in her back leg region. She received a cortisone shot and anti inflammatory meds in the region. We are going to give it a weekend to see if she improves. Unfortunately, she has lost ability of her body functions. If her condition does not improve, we can not let her suffer like this.

Sucks, she is a great dog. Do not want to take her in...I've done it for one dog and it is the hardest thing one can do.

You're so right, I wonder why we put ourselves through this with dogs, knowing how short their lives are. The reward is truly worth it..sorry you're going through this and hope she pulls through

Sorry to hear.

We had to put our 16 year old beagle this summer due to back problems. She had them since she was 3 or so, but through medication and treatment we were able to give her a long healthy life.

14 years old for a small dog isn't old but she probably had a good life. Always remember, you are doing what is right for her.

This poem is one way to think about it.

quote:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

And frick you for making me cry.

I have a 2 year old Brittany Spaniel and she is the sweetest dog. Really rambunctious but very sweet. I have an older dog that is a mutt that we found and he may only have 4-5 years left. I don't want to think about going through what you are in the future, but I guess it comes with having dogs.

ETA: My family dog was miniature dachshund and he fell off a chair and hurt his back. He couldn't move his back legs and dragged them if he wanted to walk. It was the most pitiful thing ever and hard to watch.

He ended up getting all his mobility back after getting some shots. He lived another 4-5 years after that. Died at 16 I think.

Dachshunds always have back issues and if he can make it through, so can your dog.

Good luck, FWIW in my humble opinion, the steroids should at least get her back to where she was before the slip, it is not like the slip caused the arthritic mass, it had been there for some time and the slip aggravated it. Was she having problems with bodily functions before the slip? Anyway good luck and giver her a ribeye for supper tonight
