We've had a large increase in our coyote population and are looking to do something about it. Trapping isn't an option since the property is too far away to go up every weekend. We'll be heading up this weekend with hopes of calling a few in a busting their arse. We'll likely split into 2 or 3 groups of 2 to cover 1700 acres and use both electronic and mouth calls. Anyone have any pointers for a group of rookies? best time of day, type of call, etc...?

TIA

we'll also shoot some rabbis and have rabbit guts in the fields unless someone thinks thats not a good idea

first of all it seems like if you are split into groups you are calling agianst each other, never done it that way so i dont know.
Best time i have done it is late in the afternoon, use an electronic call "i like the squeeling wabbit". Have it placed a good 50-75 yards from you. Be very camouflauged..face, hands, guns, everything camo! The coyote will see any thing out of place. Dont use a gun with stainless barrel, it will see it from a mile away. Thats about all i can think of, lip squeek works great too once you get the yote within range and want to pull him closer.

Diesel, I used to do some hunting out in New Mexico when I lived there. We had better luck with the electronic calls. The first call of the morning at first light usually paid off the best, but I have had them come to a call at all hours. It is fun as hell to have one come to a call. You will become addicted.

Im worried about this too. I didnt plan on doing it this way, but when I said I was going, everyone jumped on board and said they wanted to go....They all pay to hunt there so I cant tell them no.

I may be a big puss, But I just dont think I could do it that way. I want them dead, but Im about a quick clean kill on everything I kill. Eating glass and slowly dying while it passes through your system doesnt seem sporting or ethical.

Not passing judgement or turning this thread into that thread.do as you see fit on your land. Just my opinion

Pop in rabbit in distress cd. Open all 4 doors of vehicle, crank up radio, sit in bed of truck with a case a beer and .22, have at it.

I do better at first light but late evening pays off sometimes too. I will probably be in the minority but mouth calls are what I prefer,to me they are more realistic. I can start a squealing rabbit and end the series like its his dying breath and its not the same sound over and over. Real good camo and scent protection is a must and playing the wind. 9 out of ten times they will circle to the downwind side of where you are calling so i try to set up to where my scent is blowing into a field or really open spot. I don't stay in the same place for more than 20 to 25 minutes if nothing comes I move on. Besides turkey hunting this is my favorite type of hunting. 15 more days of trapping and then will be joining you

This exactly. OleYeller is spot-on.

Only point I'd differ is no lip squeaks. The times I tried, they looked right at me and I was spotted...no matter how well camouflaged. Keep the luring call away from your position.

I was making a joke. I never said I agreed with the method. My grandfather marched to a different drummer than I do.

Just buy some Acme products and leave them scattered around your property. The coyotes will take care of the rest themselves.

Find some kittens and put them in a box...their cries will bring the yotes in.
