CVS, the largest pharmacy chain in the United States, will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in all of its 7,600 stores by October 1, its parent company CVS Caremark CVS +0.49% announced this morning. It is the first time any retailer has ever dropped this deadly cash cow, and it is part of a major shift in direction for the drugstore giant.

“We’ve got 26,000 pharmacists and nurse practitioners who are helping millions of patients each and every day,” said Larry Merlo, the chief executive of CVS Caremark. “They manage conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes — all conditions that are worsened by smoking. We’ve come to the decision that cigarettes have no place in an environment where healthcare is being delivered.”

Maybe they should stop selling sodas, alcohol, candy, and chips.

They really should focus on organic broccoli, bean sprouts and tofu.

Along these lines, the government needs to stop giving free food to smokers and alcoholics, only to fatten them up.
then their health goes further down and our government healthcare has to pay more to help with their high blood pressure and cancer, etc.
if you can afford cigarettes. and alcohol, you can afford your own food.

Yes. They are taking a high and mighty stance here and not for the reason you think. They stand to lose $2 billion in revenue. So why change?

A new government regulation preventing pharmacies from selling tobacco. They are just the first to comply. Thus, all attention on the do-gooders.

Add coffee to that as well. It contributes to impurity just as candy, chips, alcohol, sodas, etc.

All of those things in moderation aren't bad for you. Cigarettes arent the same. I bet they still sell E-cigs.

Don't bring logic here. It apparently isn't welcome.

Cigarettes in moderation aren't as bad for you as anti smoking campaigns want you to believe.

If by moderation you mean having one once a month or two when you are hammered, probably not. But cigarettes are addicting. I completely understand the play they are going for. They are giving up 2% of their revenue to conform to their new strategy.

I read somewhere that overuse of prescription drugs kills people. Hmm.
When does CVS take drugs off the shelf?

I'll smoke about a pack a month and consider that moderation....maybe more during hunting season if I spend every weekend during that month at the camp.
