For the many animal lovers of the OT. It's long but good.
quote:

As I said, he’s alive as I write this. I’m going to give him more cheese now. He loves that stuff. I hate to wake him, but look at it from his perspective: all of a sudden, this? Cheese? Cheese is good. This. The smell. Taste. Joy. Any more? No? That’s how it is, then. That’s how it is.

There is no way in hell I would read that "book". Put the dog to sleep and be done with it. I read some of it and it sounded like the dude was being selfish. When you have to hold a dog up for him to take a shite, it is time to let put it to sleep. Night night.

Well screw you man!

I wouldn't carry my dog to piss for a month either, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate someone who would.

Also you're wrong about it being selfish.

People care way too much about dogs and animals in general. Put him down and move on to the next one.

One of my dogs could not walk for nearly a year. I carried him everywhere he needed to go or held him up from the read by hand or with a special rear lead. In the cold, in the rainz in the heat, whatever.

Giant pain, but it made him happy until the day he died.

He was perfectly healthy otherwise and played with the other dogs in various ways.

His issue was a slowly growing numbness. Basically, his rear legs were asleep perpetually. He'd twitch when tickled and could move them, just not in a controlled way.

I loved that dog and still do.

I have known dogs that are more deserving of a life than a lot of people i know. Life is full of sentiment from many good places if you're strong enough not to ignore it.

This is our situation. Completely healthy, except for his bad back. If I could give him a new spine, he'd live another 5 years (he's 9).

He can still move around, use the bathroom on his own, and is happy, so we're not there yet. I just know I won't make the call when it needs to be made, mostly out of denial.

You will know, and it wilk make you want to kill that part of you, but it will be clear.

It is not when it is freezing and he can't find the perfect place to piss, etc.

It's when they just aren't there. I don't know, maybe I am not making sense. I have been a party to one real decision, and the decision was easy... The follow through... Nightmare.

These times give you the focus to really enjoy it so that it is worth it in the end. The price is fixed and you pay it... You can control the benefit.

Best to you and yours.

Thanks. At this point, we are looking ahead in small increments. Right now, we just want him to meet his new baby brother, due in May.

A small part of me has this morbid and selfish hope that I can't shake that when it's time, he'll just drift off one night, so we don't have to go through with doing it ourselves.

Geez, frick this conversation.

I had to put my boxer Duke down when I was in 5th grade. I remember him and that day like it was only last week.

Frick it is right.

We all have those thoughts. It is not a slight. You just want it to be done when it is time. Nothing wrong there. Not thst you need to read this from me... I am like just talking to part of myself and using this as an excuse.

Enjoy it now, regardles.
