Told myself I wasn't going to see it because the first one was pretty bad and adding Fredkles to the mix was just a posthumous slap in the face to Tolkien. BUT, I honestly put my prejudices aside and had a let's just watch a popcorn flick with an open mind.

Long story short: It was pretty good up until the very end.

Long story: Everyone knows I'm a book reader and have already turned on Peter Jackson and have no respect for him anymore. That said, adding Freckles character to the mix wasn't that bad, especially since they didn't make it a love story with Legolas. I kind of liked she was digging Fili.

The conversation between Bilbo and Smaug was the best part of the book and up until the end was the best part of the movie. But Jackson just couldn't help himself and make a creepy, soft ball it into you good story and you just make it a 10 minute long fight scene just so it would look cool in 3d (I didn't see it in 3d but that much was obvious). And then have the elves do theis elaborate scheme to pour melted gold on a... DRAGON. Yes because that will do the trick.

My biggest complaint though is the same as it was for the first. The Orcs look like crap. You have 2-3 main orcs in your story, would it of been that much harder to dress some dudes up? I'm not even asking you to do it in bulk, just the few main ones. Half the time an Orc is on the screen Im thinking god these look like crap and it takes away from the movie. Scorpion from mortal kombat (1995) looked better than Bolg. I'm currently watching mortal kombat and that is my observation.

Casting Billy Rae Cyrus as Beorn was pretty crappy too.

Overall not nearly as bad as I was expecting, but still, not that great.

TLDR

So the movie was just pretty good because you didn't care for the look of 2 or 3 Orcs?

I enjoyed the Bilbo and Smaug scene. Smaug really blew me away. The melted gold poured on Smaug didn't really bother me as it did others on here. Nit-picking really isn't my thing.

I'm sorry, not my intentions.

I don't post in a while and I come back and make people require. I seriously need to consider retirement.

Was it better than the Phantom Men, er uh, The Hobbit?

i liked it significantly more than the first.

I also liked the Smaug/Bilbo scene. Benedict C and Martin F. play well off of each other.

The only thing negative that I have to say about this movie is that I freakin' hate cliff hangers
Imo it would have been a nice transition to end The Desolation of Smaug when they enter Lake-town, but then again it would have been frustrating to not see Smaug.

:::SPOILERS:::

I am worried that Smaug is going to be killed within the first 10 minutes of the next movie and all of that suspense will be such a let down. The Battle of the Five Armies should hopefully make up for this.

My only complaint about the movie is that they have to change up the story to sell it to a larger audience (those that haven't read, and do not care about, the book). They are in it for the money after all.

Going word for word out of the book would be wonderful to someone like me. But I can see how some people might find certain parts boring. I blame the ADHD society we live in.

I always view the movies and books as 2 separate monsters. Like 2 different paths to reach the same destination.

It was one of the top movies of the year and the best dragon to ever grace the big screen.

I liked it. I hate we're only going to get one more Tolkien movie.

I thought it was a huge improvement on the first movie. Only part I thought dragged on was the fight/chase scene with Smaug at the end.

This makes me happy.

If somebody attempts the Silmarillion I will go to the freaking papers.
