Gun Broker Purchase (MO/Cert. Check question)
Posted on 2/1/14 at 1:51 pm
Posted on 2/1/14 at 1:51 pm
I made a purchase on gun broker just a couple days ago and am paying the dude with a certified check or money order.
What is the cheapest route to go for these? I assume a post office would probably be one of the more expensive routes but I'm unsure.
Any help is appreciated.

How much is it for?
ETA: The reason why I ask is anything over $1,000 has to a cashier's check or separate money orders. A money order at Western Union is like 40 cents.

What about just doing a bank transfer from your account to his? That way you have a receipt of the money changing hands.
That's how I bought the old ladys engagement ring and will do all future large purchases the same.

Unless they have accounts at the same financial institutions, it will not be the cheapest way. Wire transfers can cost anywhere from $30 to $40.

due to scams and recent fraud using WU or other type cashier checks, most buyers will only accept a usps money order
send it priority mail / fedex express 2 day mail with signature confirmation and tracking
make sure you request insurance on shipped firearm in case something happens. insurance is around $1.25 for each $100 value. Money well spent
I've done this hundreds of times ( knock in wood) with no experienced problems

Did not know this. The jeweler must have banked with chase too because I know it was free when I did it.
I take back what I said and now say, if they use the same bank as you, account transfer the money.

Six one way half dozen the other. I always use money orders from a grocery store or wherever is closest when I need one.

forgot to add, your FFL dealer receiving the firearm may need a copy of the senders DL for his records
transfers should cost around $20

Many businesses have agreements with banks like dealerships and other high end retailers. That's probably why.

Get a money order from a check cashing place. They only charge like 30 cents and banks charge $5

I'll look into some of these.
And just to clarify, it's not for a firearm. It's actually for a 5" 9mm barrel for my M&P. I asked the guy if he banks with Chase so I could just do a quickpay but he said he doesn't and would prefer a Cert. Check or MO.
I guess the cheapest I've seen here is Walmart. Then again if I go to the post office and I can do it all in one stop.

Bapple,
a USPS MO costs $1.20
To cash a postal money order you have to either deposit into your bank account or present your DL with matching name and address at the postal counter.
If someone accepts / cashes a USPS money order and does not ship the item, it is mail fraud. It is a felony crime. Any such crimes would be investigated by the US Postal Inspectors Service.
I always send a postal MO via certified mail, return receipt so you have that added protection with full documentation ( paper trail).
There is no recourse for mail fraud if some cashes a "Circle K" .59 cent MO and fails to send the purchased item.
I've been buying/selling hunting stuff since before i-net hunting classified forums existed. Back in the day(1990), items were bought and sold through Gun List and Shotgun News magazine that you bought at a news stand.

Meh. I have read enough horror stories about deals gone bad to know that this level of 'protection' is overblown. In several cases the USPS didn't even really investigate what happened. This shouldn't be counted on as a deterrent IMO.
The best thing is to research the seller BEFORE sending payment and go with your gut to determine if they are legit. CC payment is always, always best if possible (not debit card). Consider the usual 3% CC charge on GB items to be a type of insurance.
As for the the original question, are we really discussing how to save 50 cents on a money order?

Also, "Circle K" probably uses Money Gram, which I know nothing about, but would make a nice bet is more useful than a broken federal program when it comes to fraud on such a small level.
Run-on-sentence?

prolly
But anyway I think the fastest and easiest would be the post office.
I guess I get to go visit some friendly, efficient government workers tomorrow.

Don't forget to go get your license renewed and a new inspection sticker. The trifecta from hell.

What about cashier's checks? How do those measure up to the two mentioned? I don't know the answer.
