SIAP

quote:

The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live.

It’s the most nauseating display in American public life — and I write that as someone who has just returned from a pornographers’ convention.

It’s worse than the Oscars.

That article deserves the standing ovation that is given so repeatedly and so undeservedly at the "pageant" he is decrying.

Bravo, Kevin Williamson!

Mr. Williamson does have a way with words, doesn't he?

The opinion piece or the exhalted manner in which our temporary executive branch leaders conduct themselves?

Fantastic article that reflects my own opinion to a great degree. Should be required reading.

I saved myself the anguish and did not watch. I have absolutely no respect for President Obama. The man is a habitual liar and the implementation of his policies/ideology have hurt our nation.

I think the article was an indictment of the SOU in general, not just Obama. Bush and Clinton were just as shameless, but Clinton was such a good speaker that you didn't notice it so much.

The SOTU has become nothing more than an Oscars like production. There is no honesty in politics and MOST politicians are nothing more than used car salesmen with their hand out. Unfortunately, we must rely on these snake oil salesmen to make decisions that affect our lives. At the end of the day their decisions are based on how much money they can make from special interests not on what is actually best for our country.

I did not watch the SOTU because I knew that many lies would be told and blame would be placed on everything other than the person giving the speech.

Watching both Biden and Boehner was nauseating. I realize they are in an awkward spot directly behind the camera, but if anyone was that cardboard and made that many fake smirks, awkward smiles, and generally odd looking faces in real life, they'd be laughed out of the room

The state of the union is a choreographed spectacle about on par with the WWE.
