I do laugh at those Northwestern players, sucking up a 45K per year education for free, and still wanting more and more.

wait till they offer the kids 20K, and they have to pay for their schooling. 20Kx4 years - 45K x 4 years= oooops, we had it better before

NFL isn't starting a minor league system for kids, so the kiddies better think hard about stirring the pot.

If such a union ever existed at it's desired size and strength, I'm sure we'd see a case here or there of a kid born and raised in say, Lansing, with dreams of playing for Sparty, and MSU offers him a scholarship, but the union won't allow him to sign because of some bullshite rule. Then the kid signs with Toledo and dies in a car accident on his way to his first day of school. Unions seem to always corrupt themselves and go too far.

I'm certainly not a fan of unions, and this case is no different.

Sounds like a bunch of players trying to lose their scholarships

Sounds like someone is steering these kids a line of bullshite.

I hope the get exactly what they are looking for. You bet your arse those university presidents would find a way to swing it back to them.

Ummmm.... a union has no authority to tell anyone who isn't a member what they can do. In this scenario, the recruit cannot, by definition, be a union member. Thus, he can sign wherever the hell he wants. This scenario has precisely 0% chance of EVER happening. I don't mean it is unlikely, I mean it is impossible.

I think both union and non-union schools would start to use it as a recruiting tactic.

"If you sign this player, all the union players on your team will transfer."

Hard to say something's impossible when the union hasn't even been formed yet.

Why would a school that cost 45K a year want to be at a disadvantage over a school that is 10K by forcing an athlete they really want to pay the full tuition?? Nothing to do with the 20K in pocket

Cowheard made the observation that if college jocks want to be considered employees, then their "income" should be taxed the same way pipefitters' income is taxed. A $40K scholarship, room and board, all that adds up quickly. As well, all 4 major sports union dues are paid for by the pro athletes, and those dues are not cheap. Who will pay for these dues with college athletes?

I just don't see how these players have any leverage whatsoever?

One thing is for sure, state schools certainly are not in the business of taking demands from unions.

So the union is going to make a demand to the school? The school will just say "see ya"

I think people greatly overestimate the importance of sports to many of these universities.

If in a union, then they are employees. If employees, then their scholly money, and all other benefits, is income, which they should pay taxes on.
