The area has been cleaned, but I still smells. Someone told my wife that if she used bleach around the toilet, it would ruin the seal and what we are smelling is the sewer. Is this true? All she used are the disinfectant wipes with bleach. Never happened in any other house. TIA

Might need to replace the wax ring underneath the toilet. Youtube it, it is a pretty easy job.

Are you on a city system or septic/mechanical?

The P trap shouldn't be letting the smell come back in like that.

If you sit on the toilet and it wiggles, replace wax ring. If wood floor replace wax ring and possibly wood around it.

Only a year old, shouldn't be the wax ring already.

If they tiled the floor, it is possible they used a too small wax ring. I had to change all mine to a double sized wax ring when I tiled mine.

No matter how level a tile floor feels they are almost NEVER perfectly level on a tile floor.

Tile is likely the culprit to why your wax ring is no longer sealing.

after you change the wax ring you should put plaster of paris around the bottom of the base (apply as if it were caulk, but don't use caulk)

The plaster will harden so it wont rock anymore, the rocking on uneven tiles is what wore the wax down.

They make plastic shims for leveling toilets. If you try to level it with grout it will just break. It's not plaster of Paris used on tile floors.

Yes you can use the plastic shims but many times they get swept away when people mop.

If the plaster of Paris has time to set it will form a solid base that wont be missing in a few months.

It sounds like you've run across a bad application, plaster of Paris isn't supposed to be brittle when setup.

Thanks for all the responses. Being less than a year old, if it is the wax ring, should the plumber who installed it handle this?

it's probably as easy as changing your AC filter.

Wax ring probably cost 4 bucks

You've obviously never seen my handyman work around the house. By the time I am through with it I will have to buy a new toilet, paper holder and fire bath tub.
