Anyone ever invest in domain names at GoDaddy?

I know the probability of finding a prosperous domain name that no one has thought of yet is pretty slim, but just wondering if anyone has ever profited personally from doing so?

Do you just buy a name and hope someday someone makes an offer to purchase from you?

I have. If you google "domain names" you should get an ad that allows you to buy them for $1.99, which is cheaper then the $7.99 or so they charge you if you go directly to their site. Once you get the names you think are winners you can put them up on GoDaddy auctions.

ETA: I just checked and got an ad from GoDaddy for $.99 domain names! What do you have to lose?

I've thought of that before as well

Dallascowboys.com is the only one I've heard of. It expired and a guy turned into a gay cowboy website. I assume Jerry Jones paid up (and was on The League)

If I use yahoo for website hosting and that's where I pay for my domain, can I still use GoDaddy to buy up other domains that will forward to my website?

Not legal advice, etc, but may wish to check subsection d here. LINK

This was a much bigger deal 15+ years ago before companies really got wise to the internet. I seem to recall that some dude snapped up toyota.com and got a decent payout for it - before the Cybersquatting act was passed.

Yes, but you could always just buy them from yahoo so they all stay together under one account.
