They'll bitch and moan, but the thing is we have China by the balls and vice versa. People bitch and complain about owing money to China, but they're investing in us because of our foreign presence and investment in their country. The money they invest in us is going right back in their system. They don't expect a cent to be paid directly back to them. If the US and China go to war, expect economic collapse of both countries.
Despite the fact that hippies hate corporations, they are the key to world peace. Or should I say trade is the key to world peace. You can't hate corporations and love world peace.

Is there still a legit threat to America?
Operations in OEF/OIF under covered plots, money trails, and active terrorist cells to perform numerous attacks on American soil. If a small military presence in Kuwait and North Africa can still prevent future attacks, politicians need to cut the DA Civilian force.
If a military presence in the Middle East and North Africa does no good what so ever and GWOT will officially end at the end of this year, then yes, downsizing must occur like at the end of every other previous war the U.S. has ended.
As a Combat Vet, I'd hate to see us lose ground we'll just have to go retake in 5-10 years...

Not a threat.
They are working on a carrier killer missile but who knows how legit that will be if it is ever deployed.
They remain a regional threat and nothing more.

Yeah I hate that as well. If we had just taken care of business in 91...a lot of good men would still be with us.

A regional threat in those parts is an international threat. Those two countries fighting over those damn islands are the number 2 and 3 economies in the world. They may bitch and moan about the land, but they're not going to go to the point of war.

All of the costs associated with gaining that ground are sunk costs. It is a shame how much it cost us. The question is, are those gains worth the carrying costs to keep it? Are the consequences of giving that ground up worth it?

What can I say, I'm an optimist that the world wide economic ramifications will keep the two from fighting. The two countries loathe each other and that land is utterly worthless, and lets hope for once the UN does something to prevent a war.

I just find it funny how most of America can't tell the two countries apart, aside from the fact that one has a big wall and is communist and the other was nuked and had suicide pilots. Bet a ridiculously pathetic portion of the population could only tell me those two things, with sushi being the only other thing they'd get right about their differences.

In 2014, I'd say yes. The Taiwan Relations Act, of 1979, does not create an obligation on the part of the US to defend Taiwan, and I doubt Obama has any interest in committing the US to defend Taiwan.
