NEW ORLEANS - At least two people have been killed and one person critically injured in weather-related traffic accidents along icy Interstate 10 in southern Louisiana, where state police say they have worked more than 200 accidents in the frigid weather.

State police Capt. Doug Cain urged people to stay off the roads if possible Friday. He said stretches of I-10 remained closed Friday afternoon as freezing precipitation fell.

Among the closures was a stretch of I-10 westbound between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Some state lawmakers heading to the Capitol to hear the governor's budget recommendations Friday had to take back roads. And they wrapped up work quickly to head home before conditions worsened.

Earlier Friday, Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency because of the frigid weather.

With so much of our interstate off the ground and above water I am sure it was pretty bad.

I saw 6 cars in ditches today and plenty more tire tracks where cars had no doubt crashed earlier. I even saw two spin out and hit the ditches while they happened.

One in front of me that went across Hwy 171, through the middle ditch and just shy of being in oncoming traffic. Lucky for him he had a 4 wheel drive and was able to get right out after coming to a stop and collecting himself but no doubt he pooped his pants a little. He did two 360s, one clockwise and one counter, and a 180 before he stopped.

The other one hit the same icy spot as the first guy like 30 seconds later. Luckily he was behind me but he slid into the right side ditch after swerving left and right some and got stuck. He would have swerved and hit me had he been on the side of me.

Many many more than 200. There were 3 on a rural road by my house that most likely weren't reported. At least 3 vehicles slid into ditch.

I believe it. I saw people driving like fricking idiots today. Well, that's everyday but much more so today considering the conditions.

Absolutely. Imagine if one kid or god forbid a bus load of kids were killed because of an icy road.
We don't have the resources to handle even a small storm like today just like they don't have can't handle a storm like sandy.

There were more than that I bet. So many cops were just letting people pull each other out. They usually ticket you for that stuff and make you get a tow truck to pull you out. So I'm thinking a lot of accidents didn't get reported.

If people spent a weekend practicing on a skid track this wouldn't happen nearly so often. Just saying.
