Motorists soon may see an explosion of advertisements plastered on state roads, bridges and rest areas in Louisiana’s latest bid to raise cash during lean times.

quote:

The state already faces a $12 billion backlog of road and bridge needs.

However, any money raised through advertisements would be used to defray agency operation expenses, not trim the state’s staggering backlog.

“If we find someone to sponsor a rest area, we would use the money to offset our operation costs of that rest area,” Desselle said.

Will people who win DOTD contracts be allowed to purchase ads?

Well this is a disingenuous use of the Needs number.

What's going to happened to the TIMED program? It was enacted in 1989 as a 4 cent sales tax for a specific list of projects including 4-laning 535 miles of highways, new MS River bridges, etc. Most of these are complete.

List: www.timedla.com

I think it should be renewed for a new list of projects to combat this $12B backlog. I-49 south, new I-10 bridge at Lake Charles, etc.

Yep, but it's probably a welcomed by-product by those in power. I think Chicago has done something similar before.

Raise the damn gas tax already! Hasn't been raised in almost 25 years as construction costs continue to risealong with the rise in MPG for most vehicles, it is no wonder the state can not adequately fund the backlog of road projects.

But no politician has the balls to step-up and tell the truth. And people will bitch and bitch about adding an extra 10-15 cents a gallon, yet they spend far more on that for car maintenance repairs which are accelerated due to crappy roadways and wasted gas sitting in congestion everyday.

And State Farm just got approved to increase car insurance rates in the state by 3-4%. Coincidence?
