At the camp this past weekend I was invited to go on an Elk hunting trip to western Colorado. I have listened to his stories of his past trips and it sounds like a great time. 9 days of camping in the Colorado wilderness. All I need is 2 weeks off work and about $1500. Tags and gas are the biggest expense. The guy that invited me has a big tent,a wood burning stove, all the cooking gear, backpacks, and an outdoor shower. He packs all the meals and is well prepared. This guy has hunted the area and knows it well, which is a big plus.
I will not be able to go anytime soon, but in the future, I would love to go.

Anyone hunt Elk/camp Colorado area and have any good tips, ideas, or stories about it?

Be sure you understand what he is providing up front (I.e. accommodations, firewood, cooking, packing out game, etc.)...

Elk hunting is not like whitetail hunting in that you need horses, etc to get the game out if you kill....also can get in pretty big trouble if a freak snowstorm blows in and you are not prepared...

Tons of info.....
Some things to consider, as Spankum said, find out all specifics. You don't want to come up short and leave essentials behind. OOS tag will run yu about $400. Get on the Colorado Parks And Rec site ( used to be Co. dept of Wildlife) and get familiar with the regs as they are numerous. There is a TON of good info within the Big Game hunting section.

Depending on where in "western" Co he hunts, there is spectacular public land to chase elk on.

You have to pay for the tags in cash, no credit cards.

Start working out now. You need to be in god shape for hunting in the mountains. Try and figure out what elevation your camp and hunting area will be before hand.

Altitude sickness can be an issue if your not prepared.

Yeh the old guy starts about a month or so before he said. Lots of walking and packing out meat if you kill.

I trained for 4 months, walking 2 miles a day wearing a 40 lb pack and still got winded. We just cant reproduce the elevation and steepness of the hill you have to climb up and down.

My dad went one year and killed a small 4x4. He hasn't been back since. I think the altitude and roughing it was a little more than than he bargained for.

The first week of rifle hunting in CO is a draw hunt statewide. Must apply by early April. Some areas are easy to draw and some require preference points. Depending on where you hunt, the later hunts are over the counter in many areas. If you can find out what unit you are hunting, you can figure that out.

Correct,he talked about the lotto hunt and we are not doing that. This would be over the counter.
