Catching hell trying to find a recent boundary map for the Homochitto forest in Wilkinson County.
Even called the Forest office in Meade, and they said there are no good maps, that I would need to contact the Wildlife enforcement in the area and let them "show me around"

There really aren't maps for up there. He wasn't lying. We had to make our own. Let me see if I can dig some up later today

FWIW, the boundary lines are all marked

On the motor vehicle use map (index 20) it shows that road 126B is forest...rode it yesterday, and it has a locked gate and a posted sign.

Logging road probably. We built a bunch of roads and pushed berms on the entrances of smaller ones when we were done

You oughta go by the office at lake okhissa and ask for one. It's pretty easy for them to put you off on the phone. I would bet if there is one they would have it and give it to you.

Where was the gate? My map is probably 4-5 years old but shows Forest on both sides of that road.

But they are correct about the maps sucking. A few years ago I spent half a day walking a road that wasn't on the map, looking for a road that was on the map but apparently doesn't exist.

They didn't have them for the 3 years that I was going up there, and almost 2 of that was as a forester. We made our own maps

Boot, I have one of those big Delorme maps that has some of the smaller roads as dashed blue lines and the bigger ones as red lines. My Garmin gps that I had in the truck also had random roads.

Here is the Delorme one. I guess you could save the pic and zoom in on it

The best thing you could do would be to go out and ask a logger or driver for a labelled map. I couldn't find mine. We used those maps you posted earlier, but blew them up and filled in a bunch of roads that werent on there

Not sure if this will help but:

The private land corner isn't far from the end of 126B. Is that where the gate is? Maybe it goes all the way through instead of dead ending the way it appears on here.

The gate is at the very beginning of 126B, like 50ft after you turn off of Crooked Creek. Where'd ya get that map, MOT? It's a lot better than the one I've got...

Hammertime, I'm looking at hunting a little west of that map ya posted. Have any info over there?

Definitely appreciate the help, fellas.

The Okhissa station like pdubya mentioned above. What color was the gate and was the posted sign on it?

I've never hunted over in that area but around the other parts they keep several gates locked. There is a little piece of private there on the corner off Crooked Creek, maybe someone wants to make the whole road look posted? I would check for red paint.

Then again my map could be outdated already. I think I picked it up in the Spring of 2010.

It definitely wasn't a forest gate. Those are kept painted and have reflective tape...this one is dinky and rusted. You're right, probably whoever owns that small parcel is trying to block access to the entire road.

What's your email? I can try and send you the 8 megapixel pics from my phone if they aren't too big. Sorry they aren't all labelled, but I guess you can match them up with the maps you have.

Here are some of them. I don't know how detailed they will be once you copy them, but here they are North to South:

And a map just to give you orientation of everything:

Like I said earlier though, it was weird, but my regular old truck gps had a bunch of the roads, even the smaller ones. Jesus, looking at those maps is bringing back some good memories

Can you check the county plat for the property that you can identify?

Try google earth?

Found some areas I want to check out via Google earth, just need to find out if they're public or not. Really hard to tell in that area. Didn't think of checking county plat.

Go to the forest station at the NW corner of 84 and 98 in Meadville. They have the best available maps there.

Also, don't go north of Meadville. Lot of bad bad stuff happens up there in those woods. Lot of pot, meth, shinin', and other stuff those hillbillies will kill to protect.
