Rickety boats chasing them for hours when a .50 Cal or even a decent shooter with a deer rifle could have stopped the boarding in the first place.

It's a great metaphor for how it will be if we lose our guns.

We are left with water hoses when the bad guys come with their guns.

Yeah it would be very similar feeling. I always wondered why the sailors didn't have at least a shotgun or two to defend themselves?

I've always wondered this about oil tankers or any ships that travel through area in general. I'm guessing the captain is scared of a mutiny or crew members fighting.

I don't think they're allowed to. It's retarded.

Major corporations have insurance to cover the losses of the vessel. Liability insurance for the use of a gun appears to be much greater.

Isn't that the movie where the crew said the depiction of the captain was full of shite?

yep. Took unnecessary risks, etc. Never rely on a hollywood movie to portray the truth. Good story, though.

Heard an international boat captain on the radio once and he said lots of foreign countiries won't allow weapons into their ports. Others will allow them if the weapons are locked in a gun safe abord the ship beforing entering the port.

Didn't love the movie, ok, but vastly overrated.

Serious question: why watch the Hollywoodized version of the story when the documentary on Netflix, with real participants and actual footage, is so thorough and engrossing?

The precision involved in the resolution, by the way, is jaw dropping.

I think it has something to do with the laws of the countries they port in. I've heard of some private security companies who do that kind of work and they just drop their weapons overboard before the dock.

How do you believe that based on the story?

It amazes me that I get to the office each day without my shotgun at hand considering the post-apocalyptic state of our public roads!

I read an article about this last month. About 1/4th of the ships traveling that route now employ a small security team with automatic weapons. None of those ships has ever been boarded. When a pirate boat approaches they fire some shots over the speed boat to let the Pirates know what guns they've got. The Pirate boat will veer off and look for a different ship.
