Blame Coaches

There was one huge unanswered question following the Saints 23-15 playoff loss to Seattle on Saturday: Was Marques Colston's lateral on the final play of the game a called by the Saints coaching staff or did Colston go rogue and decide to make an unplanned lateral across the field?

Saints coach Sean Payton didn't really answer the question when he was asked about it after the game, but he did it answer it on Monday. Payton said Colston's lateral was planned and that the Saints called the play because they saw something on film that made them think it would work.

Payton did concede that he might have called the play to early. There were 13 seconds left when Brees took a third-and-2 snap from the Saints' own 49.

Who gives a frick? It was a desperation play and I don't blame the coaches or Colston.

Because something like that is way less likely to happen than a 40 yard pass from Brees?

I see trying something like that from your 20 but when you are around midfield and have time there is no reason to be that stupid.

wasnt a terrible decision, just executed poorly.

who would be expecting that? most would just expect colston to go out of bounds to stop the clock. if he throws it to a guy and he has the open field he scores. if he cant score, he can run out of bounds and stop the clock for a shorter final pass. colston got the ball with 8 seconds left. plenty of time to try the trick play there as long as the other guy runs out of bounds if he cant score.

payton made more bonehead calls earlier in the game. colston just fricked up bad

I don't mind that call. If executed it seemed like it would have worked.

Had Colston ran the onside kick recovery to paydirt through the open lane directly in front of him, we don't have this discussion.

Good thinking.

Oh yeah, except for the fact that you can't advance an onside recovery.
