Computer Recovery Help
Posted on 1/13/14 at 7:25 pm

I just installed a new hard drive to replace one that crapped out
I have no idea what to do at this point. The computer, Dell Vostro 220, is older and I cannot locate the recovery disk.
What are my options? Talk to me like I'm a noob please.
I have a SATA cable that I'm using to read the old hard drive on my laptop right now, but i don't think its reading it

ok, somehow i used a windows cd to boot and ran some repair utility and now i'm up and running with the old drive again
i see the old drive has a recovery partition on it, but i'm not sure how to introduce the new drive now

Just use Google to find the easy way to grant verification. Never pay for an OS again.

All you want to do is copy the old files to the new drive..Why are you bothering with the recovery partition ?

ok
somehow i used the recovery feature from a windows 7 install disk to finally boot up windows from the old drive
i contemplated copying the entire contents to the new hard drive, but i was reading where that might not make the new drive bootable
i ended up using the windows 7 disk with the clean hard drive and did a new install....its working fine, but i have to activate it
i need to try and boot the old drive once more to retrieve the windows 7 product key to transfer to the new drive i guess
the sticker on the PC is for windows vista....i have the disk for it, but i'd prefer to keep the windows 7 copy, which was attained from tigerware several years ago

You can try and run Belarc pointed at the old drive. It should tell you the product key

Croacka, what are you trying to do, exactly? Where are you at this point? I would recommend leaving the old hard drive to run your OS and programs and just adding the new one as a data drive. If you are past that point, then something else will need to be done.
ETA: I see one crapped out on you. So, therefore, you cannot do what I recommended.
I gotta learn to read all of the posts....lol.

I may text you if I run into a problem
I have a severe lack of knowledge on this stuff
I post questions here but response time isn't always the best

That cool. I'll help in whatever way I can. Its difficult when it isn't right in front of you but I think you know enough to be able to explain. But, you have the PC running, it just isn't activated. It won't be a problem from here, I suppose. Any chance you can prove you purchased the Windows 7? You may be able to call MS and get a key from them.
