DETROIT -- The 2015 GMC Canyon is the bolder, more-chiseled half of General Motors' dual bid to revive consumer interest in smaller pickups.

While the Chevrolet Colorado is sporty and sleek, the Canyon, its corporate sibling, looks a bit like a little brother to the GMC Sierra full-sized pickup. And that's by design.

The Canyon, unveiled Sunday on the eve of press previews for the 2014 Detroit auto show, was designed to resemble a "little Sierra" to attract buyers of full-sized pickups from other brands, says GM North America President Mark Reuss.

Reuss said he believes some owners of bigger trucks such as Ford's F-150 and the Ram 1500 want a smaller vehicle that still has most of the hauling and towing capability.

The powertrain options on the Canyon are the same as those offered on the Colorado. Two gasoline engines are available: a 193-hp, 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine and a 302-hp, 3.6-liter, V-6 engine. Both engines feature direct fuel injection and variable valve timing.

A six-speed automatic transmission is standard and a six-speed manual gearbox is available with the 4-cylinder engine in extended cab models.

GM, aiming for even more incremental sales, plans to offer a 2.8-liter turbodiesel option in both trucks in the second model year.

I like the ideal of the diesel. It's based on a chassis used worldwide (worldwide at least for trucks.....Africa, Australia, and Asia) that has translated to what would almost qualify as a full sized truck just 15 years ago. It's about the same size as the original Toyota Tundra.

I wouldn't be shocked if they cannabalize sales from the larger full sized trucks.

The GMC version looks pretty good and there should be a market for these depending on pricing. If they are too close to a full size on price you might as well just get the big one.

The Tacoma only owns that market because there is no other competition. Nothing wrong with some competition as it will force them to improve their product. While Tacomas are reliable pieces of machinery, they have gotten quite bland.

I like this idea. I would LOVE for them to release a midsize SUV with body-on-frame, RWD construction again. I drive a GMC Envoy and it's been a great vehicle for me. I just can't stand all the crossover FWD pieces of crap taking over the market. I will never own a FWD vehicle... ever.

Only thing that interests me with the new GM midsizes is the possibility of a diesel. But that interest would totally depend on price. It's probably gonna be stupid expensive for that option.

They also overcharge for what is an outdated product because there's no real competition other than the aging Nissan Frontier and Honda Ridgeline (which is more of a niche product).

It's an easy target. Hopefully for the consumer, it will push Toyota and Nissan to redesign their mid sized trucks and offer a diesel engine option. The Toyota Hilux and Chevy Colorado are major competitors overseas as well. Either company could very cheaply and easily update their north American models....but for now Toyota looks complacent in this market.

I wouldn't be shocked if the new Colorado and Canyon forces Toyota's hand in moving the Hilux diesel engine into the North American Tacoma products or pushes Nissan to redesign their Frontier.

GM is about to release two all new mid size trucks that look fantastic and offer a Diesel engine. Toyota and Nissan better get to drawing boards ASAP bc their product is antiquated. Will the Colorado/Canyon dethrone the Tacoma in sales? Probably not, but they'll certainly gain a bunch more market share.

Frontier needs a total redesign if Nissan wants to hang around in this category. When I bought my tacoma, I looked at a frontier just to see what they offered. I went straight to get the Tacoma after leaving the Nissan dealership.

As much as I hate the front end on that thing, I would buy it today if they brought it here. Hopefully, this move by GM will push Toyota to improve the Tacoma. I love mine but there are definitely things that they could do better.

Colorado
Canyon
Dakota
Frontier

All were options when the new Tacoma came out.

I'd put money on me EASILY being able to break a new Tacoma. I was not able to do it with a 99 or an 04. I can basically break any vehicle you give to me for a year. If you wanna see the perfect definition of a tough truck, look at all Toyota small trucks before 05.

For some reason(I know why), Toyota has not adapted the Hilux for the US market, and frankly they have enough worldwide sales to not worry about it either. Maybe this will bring a Hilux here, but that is only a 30/70 chance IMHO.

Eta: A Hilux is 2000% more tough than anything in the US market now. One of the main reasons they don't bring it here is because people only keep trucks for a few years and not 500,000 miles like the rest of the world. A Hilux would blow the Tacoma out of the water.

I like the looks of the truck for the most part but...

It's all about Price point and MPG. If both of those numbers are remotely close to the Silverado, this thing will Bomb.

Did they say where these will be built?

Please please, little 5 pound baby Jesus.

And anything else GM, Ford, Dodge could make to challenge it. It is the king of all things awesome.

The Hilux is very similar to the Tacoma, but obviously has unique styling for the different markets. There's a diesel version of the Toyota that I'd like to see in the US.

The overseas Chevrolet/Holden Colorado (which is the basis of the 2015 Colorado and Canyon) looks kind of awkward, but is supposed to be a very good product. I'm glad they changed the styling for the North American market. There's a 2.5L and 2.8L diesel option overseas, but we are only getting the 2.8L engine.....which is actually more powerful than the old 6.5L V8 diesel engine from the 1990s if you are familiar with older Chevy Suburbans and C/K Silverado trucks.

Ford is supposed to have a nice mid sized truck overseas, but they have no plans of bringing it to the US.

For the North American markets - Wentzville, Missouri

Overseas markets - Rayong, Thailand and São José dos Campos, Brazil

They are already building right and hand left hand drive versions overseas now.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the Canyon and it's big brother to get a better idea on size.

It's similar but not the same at all. Not the same as just dropping that diesel option in a US made tacoma. The Hilux is 10x any truck we have in the market here in the US in terms of reliability and outright toughness. A newer truck built with the mentality of the 95-03 tacoma's.

I'm out for the day fellas. Busy Monday. Nice lookin truck by GM though. Like poster said earlier, it's gonna all depend on price point and MPG's on these new midsize.
