Michael Houser was born on January 6, 1962 in Boone, North Carolina. While attending the University of Georgia in 1982, lead guitarist Michael Houser started the jam band Widespread Panic with John Bell. Named after Houser's once-frequent panic attacks, the band recorded seven studio albums with Capricorn over the next 11 years. Houser wrote many of band's most popular songs, including "Porch Song," "Airplane," "Ain't Life Grand, " "Blue Indian" and "Vacation." He died on August 10, 2002, at age 40, from pancreatic cancer.

RIP Mikey

By far the best part of WSP. His tone and playing on Space Wrangler is awesome. So much better than Jimmy Herring.

RIP. frick cancer.

One of my favorites of all time. He may not have been the most skilled but he had a way of making that guitar cry in such a unique way.

RIP Mikey

Was waiting for that. Say what you will about them now, but to saw that about them during his time is just stupid.

Me and his son, Waker, are good friends. They look just alike.

He died on my birthday. I tried to keep my love panic alive since but it never was the same without him. Jimmy sucks. There. I've said it.

Yeah, people might think I just blindly hate WSP but I have seen them over 5 times and feel I have the right to declare they are boring as shite live. I respect Herring but he doesn't fit in the band at all. For that matter no one does. The band should have ended when Houser died. I don't know the backstory behind that but a band should never continue when the key member passes away.

I guess someone could counter-argue it with the Allman Brothers Band, but at least Dickey Betts was also a world class guitar player himself, whereas John Bell is a complete joke. ABB was also lucky enough to score Derek Trucks.

He's there to be the frontman and has never been known for his guitar playing. Also I think you're wrong about saying they should have ended the band after Houser because I've heard a few gems during the Jimmy era. Rothbury 2008 is one of the best Panic shows I've heard. I do wish they would change it up and jam a little more but you can't go into the show expecting a Phish show.

I ate ENTIRELY too much acid before that show and had to lay in my tent at our camp and regain my sanity

I could hear Bell's guttural noises all the way out in lot crystal clear
