Does anyone here have experience caring for a loved one who is dealing with delirium? My wife has breast cancer that has spread to her lungs and brain. She is in a clinical trial but I know she doesn't have much time left. She has had small episodes of delirium in the past but the doctors said that wasn't uncommon for someone in her condition. Well, last night she was awake the entire time seeing things and talking to people that aren't there. We have an appointment to see her doctor this morning. I'm at a complete loss for what to do until then. If anyone else here has been through this, I would appreciate any advice.

I'm so sorry to hear about the struggles you and your wife are going through. How early did they catch the breast cancer, if you don't mind me asking...had it already spread or was it still isolated to the breast and/or nodes?

Hopefully they figure out the cause and treat it. It could be something as simple as a UTI, or as complicated as the brain mets. Sending prayers your way.

It was caught when it was pretty small. She had a double mastectomy and the doctors thought she would be fine. A little over a year later, she started having headaches and the head metastasis was found. We are on our 3rd clinical trial (MD Anderson, Tulane, and now NIH in Bethesda, MD). I think it's about time to let the fight go though. It has turned into a quality of life issue the last few weeks. She is 30.

Have the doctors prescribed a sedative that she is taking?

They'll be able to get most of that under control with meds. However, she will be very groggy from it, typically. Both of my grandparents had alzheimers and delirium, same kind of stuff you're describing. It takes a lot of patience for sure.

God Bless your wife and family.

Again, I am so, so sorry for your suffering as well as hers. Life makes no sense sometimes. Some questions just go unanswered, some pleas, unfortunately, do the same. I was just diagnosed. My first appt with the surgeon is today at 2. It just hurts my heart for you, y'alls family (do y'all have kids?) and y'alls friends. Is she a DNR? (I'm sorry if I'm asking questions that are too personal..just tell me to back off if I am..no offense will be taken)

I suspect all of those institutions have a talented group of social workers who have experience in this area and may be able to assist you and your family go thru this difficult time so I would start there. prayers sent

I wish I knew what to tell ya buddy. My mom died with breasts cancer when I was 6 years old. What finally got her was that it spread to her liver. In 1974 there wasn't much they could do short of a mastectomy. Unfortunately they didn't catch it in time. I really truly wish I could tell you something to make it better, but I don't. Just know that their are people you don't even know who care and are praying for you and your family.

The proper sedation should slow brain activity and prevent delirious episodes, but as a poster before mentioned, it will likely make them groggier. At least this was the case when my mother was in the ICU.

Prayers to you, man. NIH is just around the corner from me. Top of the line institution.

My prayers go out to you also. If I may ask how old are you? Did they catch it early?

We have a 3 year old daughter. As for a DNR for my wife, no we don't have one. I never thought I would say it, but I'm starting to believe we need one.

Prayers to you as well.

I'm 42 and though they think they caught it early, it is located very close to the lymph nodes in my left arm. That, along with the fact that I have a long history of breast cancer in my family and tested positive for the genetic factor, makes them want to do a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I suppose that's what this first surgical appt is for..to discuss the options. But I was told that the decision has to be made fast bc they want to act on it fast bc of the possibility of metastasis to other organs. They just found the lump last week.
