I thought if the ball became dead in the endzone, and the other team put it there, then it should have been a touchback. LSU's ball on the 20. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's if the ball rolls out the back of the endzone.

That's what I thought too, but I'd be willing to bet that I know less of the rules than the officials who made the call

You're wrong. It didn't go out of bounds, therefore it was a live ball. Since the possessor can't advance the ball on a fumble, the ball was placed at the spot of the fumble.

It has to roll out of bounds or be downed by an LSU player. Ball was just whistled dead, therefore, Iowa ball at point of fumble.

This has been debated several times since yesterday. I'm too lazy to search and link it for you though

If not immediately recovered it's spotted at the point of the fumble..

Not a heads up play by our guys. Jump on it, we have it on the 25.

Pick it up and run, then who knows.

it really is the dumbest rule...you can fumble it forward but if nobody picks it up or it doesnt go out of bounds, you get it back. I hope they look at it and turn that in to a touchback

Why would they expect that to not have been a TD? It would have been equivalent to someone picking up the ball after someone spiked it in the endzone.

They would have to have seen him drop the ball before he reached the goal line, to even think about making a play on the ball.

The ref signalled TD, can't fault our guys for not jumping on every ball after a play is blown dead

I'm almost willing to bet that it is a touchback.

It was signaled as a TD, only review showed that it was a fumble. Was as heads up as it could have been.

If it even looks close, jump on it. It might save your team 6.

If that happened on one team I played on, the coach would have been chewing asses for not jumping on the ball. This was when I was in 8th grade for God's sake.

Of course it helped we didn't have facemasks back then.

TD. At least IAW rules that were quoted here last night.

Of course if you fumble during a run (as occurred earlier in the game) before forward progress is stopped, that is a fumble.

If you try to down a punt by catching the ball, then casually tossing it into the endzone, that is a touchback.

If the offensive team does not substitute, the defensive team is not given extra time to line up.

It was a poorly called game.

Do I amuse you?

No, I'm serious. The NORD Raiders. Coach Larry Bettencourt. Mean sucker, but he taught fundamentals.

FIFY

You wouldn't expect players to jump on a ball that has been dropped while celebrating a TD. Yeah it sucks we didn't get the ball, but there aren't many football players that would have jumped on that ball in that situation unless they saw him drop it early. The ref was clearly signaling TD.
