Salary dump and delusions of signing Carmelo or Lebron for the Lakers is why they would make that move.

They absolutely could sign Melo (don't see how LeBron would dive into that situation) but, even if they whiffed on Melo, it would still be majorly worth it to have that kind of space available the next few summers.
