Only 43% of Republicans accept human evolution, down 11 percentage points from four years ago.

(Reuters) - One-third of Americans reject the idea of evolution and Republicans have grown more skeptical about it, according to a poll released on Monday.
Sixty percent of Americans say that "humans and other living things have evolved over time," the telephone survey by the Pew Research Center's Religion and Public Life Project showed (Click here for the full survey).
But 33 percent reject the idea of evolution, saying that "humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time," Pew said in a statement.
Although this percentage remained steady since 2009, the last time Pew asked the question, there was a growing partisan gap on whether humans evolved.
"The gap is coming from the Republicans, where fewer are now saying that humans have evolved over time," said Cary Funk, a Pew senior researcher who conducted the analysis.
The poll showed 43 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Democrats say humans have evolved over time, compared with 54 percent and 64 percent respectively four years ago.
Among religious groups, white evangelical Protestants topped the list of those rejecting evolution, with 64 percent of those polled saying they believe humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.
"This has been a staple of evangelical Protestantism for nearly 100 years," said Alan Lichtman, an American University history professor and author of "White Protestant Nation: The Rise of the American Conservative Movement."

Is evolution is real why are there so many gay people? You'd think nature would have gotten rid of that unnecessary trait.

I'll take Creationists over Keynesians.

If true, that is a scary stat.

That's about right for the teabaggers

I know of no Evangelicals who believe this.
I reject evolution, but I do not believe that human beings have existed "since the beginning of time." The Bible does not say that at all. Where did that question in the poll come from?
There is no proof at all to human macroevolution. It is a theory that has developed from scientists looking backward and trying to figure out how we got here apart from divine intervention. Of course it makes perfect sense to those who believe that there is no intelligent source in the universe, so there is no point in arguing it. But, if one believes in God, then evolution is not necessary.
And yes, one can believe in God and evolution at the same time, but I don't think it is required.

If you want blindly trust the sample size and subsequent extrapolation, I can find you 100% support for pedophilia.

I'd be interested to see the registered Republican #'s now compared to last time this poll was taken. I'd be willing to bet that there are fewer and most that left are "teabaggers" who don't associate with the evangelical base leaving the Party with a higher percentage of people who take their faith more seriously.

There's nothing to "reject". It's not a "concept". It's a real a process as the force of gravity on your body. You just wouldn't be able to notice it unless you lived a million years. Our brains aren't meant to conceive large amounts of time and the changes that come with that--it's normal.

Yeah, and that is complete crap.

Lulz
Aka, only people over 60 sampled.

Why in the hell are we going to have this argument again? I can't fathom someone unwilling to accept the scientific evidence for evolution in favor of Bible stories, but damn, this discussion was had in the genetics thread.

possibly because it's not primarily genetic.
There are many theories, 4 main ones that I will espouse here:
1. Genetic theory: there is a specif gene, or a specific combination of genes, in the human genome that exhibits homosexuality in the offspring if activated. This has never been even remotely proven as little to no trends of descent (as you see in most inherited traits) seem to exist. Also, there's the evolution argument against it.
2. mutation theory: homosexuality is caused by a mutation in the genetic code occurring after DNA is passed down to the offspring. There are many possible sources for this mutation: sunlight, pollutants, chemicals, hormones, the mother's immune system, ect. Some studies suggest that mothers' immune systems often see a male fetus as a foreign body and attempt to "feminize it". The body gets more and more effective at this the more children a woman has. This would explain why homosexual male children tend to be younger siblings.
3. Aquired trait: homosexuality is a product of the environment of upbringing. This could have to do with some kind of interaction between physiological, emotional, chemical, interpersonal, and physical interactions between the offspring and its environment. Included in this blanket theory is the "learned behavior" theory that homosexuality is learned and has no genetic or chemical basis at all. This would explain the fact that people who come out of the closet often exhibit "gay" mannerisms, styles of dress, hobbies, and interests.
For the record, I do not endorse any of these theories since I do not know enough about it/there is not enough information out there for me to make a truly informed decision.

Survival of the fittest would eradicate all the worlds problems. It seems like progressives are the ones that wholly reject evolution.
