Real Time Strategy Games / Turn Based Strategy

I'm in the mood for a RTS.
The Angry Joe's review of Total War Rome II has taken that one from the list. I played the first Rome but that is the only total war game I have played.
I'm thinking about Civ V or Total War Shogun II.
I haven't played a Civ since Civ III which I liked a lot but I really like the combat more in the total war games.
Any others I should have on my radar before I pull the trigger?

Civ is pretty cheap right now on Steam. I want it too as I have never played it.
Check out Age of Empires and Rise of Nations too.

Age of Empires and Rise of Nations
I've thought about just trying to find my old Ages II CD but I really want something with better graphics.

You can't go wrong with any of the Age of Empires games (I, II, Mythology, III, RoN) All really good.

You can get both Age of Empires 2 and 3 on Steam. Age of Empires 2 actually has some fun DLC that came out not too long ago. It also now has HD graphics.

Civ is not real time strategy and most of Shogun II is spent in a turn based world builder with occasional RTS battles. You looking for turn based or 4x strategy games and not RTS?

I played those to death. Really looking for something new.

I just mentioned two turn based strategy games because those are the only strategy games I seem to bbe interested in at the moment which is why I asked if I should have something else on my radar.

Anno 2070 is on sale right now for a great price. Its a futuristic sim/RTS game.
Also, some other sim/RTS
Sid Meier's Pirates
Port Royale 3
Tropico 4 (more of a sim that action RTS)

Anno is a strange mix of simcity and combat, definitely more of an instanced world builder. I have Endless Space and need to play it more but I've heard great things about it.

Pirates was good fun. One of my favorite NES games heck one of the best games of its time.
Bought Anno but never could get into it.

Play one of the old Koei historical simulation series games. Genghis Khan 2 and L'Empeurer are the best.

RUSE is $5.00 on steam right now and well worth it

I play the hell out of RUSE. Was actually playing it during Christmas. Great buy especially if you like WWII.

Iwish an updated version of Sid Meier's Gettysburg came out. Loved that game.

Empire Total War or Napoleon Total War.
Nothing beats the Total War games for strategy.

Me too. It is damned near impossible to get an old copy running on windows 7.

I agree to a point, but the limitations of the AI on Grand campaign make it quite boring.

Civ doesn't do it for me. Too cartoonish and the mechanics feel gimmicky
Victoria 2 is a great Grand Strategy Diplomacy/Wargame developed by Paradox (which has tons and tons of fun titles). A bit buggy but there are a shite ton of mods to tweak the game with
Crusader Kings 2 is fun as well
