My girlfriend surprised me with a kayak for Christmas. She got me $299 sit in model so I'm going back to academy to trade it in for Heritage Angler 10'.

I know it's just a basic model and there are lots of other ones that are better.

I plan on doing freshwater fishing, mostly bream, sac-a-lait, and going to try my hand at bass fishing.

What I need from the OB are some must have accessories for the beginning Yaker.

Such as:
Paddle recommendations
Water proof GPS
Anchor systems
Any other tips or tricks that will be helpful?

Thanks in advance.

Get a comfortable seat. That's the one downside to my kayak.

I would recommend getting a 12' kayak if you can. It'll track a lot better and give you more room.

Official, get a :

$50 Carlisle Magic paddle from Academy (230-240 cm).

A milk crate with 3 rod holder zip tied to it (tackle/rod storage)

Anchor trolley for about $30 (just be careful using an anchor system)

You should be good without a GPS right now, just focus on keeping it straight.

That should get you started. Go out with minimal gear to see how it feels, what you need, etc.

I've got a 12' sit on top and a 10' sit in and I find myself wanting to take the 10'. I don't take a lot of equipment with me though. My 12' tracks better but my 10' will glide/coast a lot further than the 12.

This thread is making me want to get out on the water.

if you are river yaking, then put a cheap pvc extension on your flush mounted rod holders. i tend to lose rods a lot when we hit the rocks.

as far as the anchor.....just tie a 10 pound weight to the side handle if you are in a lake.....anchor trolley systems are a bit outrageous.....

everything you need, you can pretty much improvise, then decide what you want later and pay the price for them if you deem them worth it.

i usually find that paying 40 bucks for an anchor and system is overkill.

we usually do 3 night trips on rivers, so going light weight is key.

Couldn't disagree more. They are absolutely awesome to have when the wind picks up. I have a homemade one that I put together for less than $10. What exactly is outrageous about them if I can ask?

Depends on where you are fishing I guess... I love mine.

Anchor trolleys are great if you are using a stake out pole.

Anything 6ft> I use my stake out pole with the anchor trolley.

Yeah I couldn't live without mine. Although I do fish primarily marsh < 3' of water so I only use my cajun anchor.

Good luck man and have fun

What area do you live in? What bodies of water will you be fishing?

i guess my point went over a clueless head.

i am actually in favor of DIY and wouldn't pay 40 or 50 for an anchor trolley set that you'd find at gander or bp.

calm down just a hair.

Yeah I'm totally out of control

I forgot this place is becoming more like the OT and disagreeing or trying to ask a question is frowned upon.

I live in cenla. So all the local lakes around. I plan on staying off the red river. The lake I fish on the most is 15-20 feet at the deepest point. But I would normally be on the edge in the cypress trees.

Nice.

I live in NWLA and fish with a couple of OB'ers regularly. If you can find any oxbows off of the Red they are pretty safe.

Welcome to the yak life.
