If this has been talked about I apologize. My boss is a huge Iowa fan, and we have been talking match ups and he mentioned that he thinks Iowa will do a heavy amount of 3 TE sets as they did against Ohio St. and Michigan St. Is this good, or bad for us? I feel like it could be a disadvantage because wouldn't our LBs have to do most of the coverage, which I don't have a lot of confidence in? Football gurus help me out. Thanks!

A consistent 3 TE set would indicate to me that they feel confident that they can run on us.

I'd be more worried about them running at us outta that set. but some guy on the Rant moved Hoko to DT yesterday, so we got our Vince Wilfork/ Ngata now. we ready.

I don't think Iowa's WR are anything outstanding and we could just go man coverage on them and put more bodies in the box to stop the run..

Wouldn't a 3 TE set bring our linebackers up to cover the run, leaving our safeties to cover any receivers and provide secondary run coverage? I like our LBs playing up to cover the run more than having to read the play for possible pass coverage. Sounds like a win for us, to me.

Arkansas has a bunch of success on us throwing out of a multiple TE set. Hope we can get that worked out for the bowl game.

Iowa is not a very good passing team. 76th in passing eff and 94th in passing yards. Their bread and butter is running the ball. I'm more worried about Iowa lining up and playing smashmouth football against our soft dline.

I can see Iowa using more compressed formations against us. They want to run the football first & foremost, but passing out of those compressed formations can be tricky to defend. Our LB's will have to be focused on filling the correct running lanes and disciplined in pass coverage.

Better study the Arkansas game tape carefully. Iowa plays a similar style of ball to them and they're on paper better able to execute it than the Hogs. My thought is that we should be able to stick White 1-on-1 with the lone WR, have Rickey Jefferson staying back at free safety and put everyone else in the box and crash down on the run/short pass out of that set (have Robinson match up with their best pass-catching TE).

If LSU covers the TE like they did in the Arkansas game then Iowa is going to have success moving the ball

Hopefully #10 can get it done. I foresee them stacking the box on us bigtime and making AJ win the game.

Also, I think they will be able to run on our front 7 so we will need to stack the box as well.

Should be a good one..

It'll be Welters chance to try and get blocked by three TEs in one play

The Welter comments are getting old. I don't understand LSU fans wanting to constantly bash the guy. He had a bad season, but come on...

I don't bash any player that puts on an LSU uniform and gives it his best. The problem is his best isn't good enough, and I blame the coaching staff for not seeing this.

Yeah it seems like there's one poster in every defensive thread who feels obligated to go after Welter. I don't understand why he wasn't replaced either, but the guy tries his best out there. He'll play an important role against Iowa. Hopefully, bowl practice will help him work on his game a bit. He's not the long-term answer at the Mike, and I expect we'll see someone new around mid-season next year.

Iowa uses the 3 TE set primarily for the run to the outside. They will play the TEs tight to the LOS as well as split one or two out in the slot and run the third in motion - and will run and pass out that formation. They will attack the play side corer with a TE or a pulling lineman, which doesn't really bode well for White @ 177lbs over the long haul. They have no real fear with running weak side on third and long out of this or any other formation.

To make the formation more effective they will run no huddle/no sub when they get the defense in particular personnel groupings (heavy on LBs or DBs) and will try to exploit accordingly. They're heady in this situation and will snap the ball quickly if a defensive substitution is attempted.

When playing at Ohio State, Iowa caught OSU in a look they were waiting on and popped them for an 85 yard TD to the secondary TE late in the third quarter o tie the game up 24-24.

The TE's are fairly big (6'7 265, 6'5 255 & 6'4 245) and compliment an athletic offensive line (Iowa's line is 15 lbs lighter than LSU's and built for zone blocking).

It will be in 3 and 4 yard increments, I doubt they throw five passes all day.
