Open 3's

I feel like we constantly leave guys wide open shooting 3's. Why is this? It's angers me greatly

Poor rotation from poor team defense.

Who is a good defender on this team not named jrue or AD?

That's no excuse for so many open players, especially when you're solid at the point of attack and at the rim. Asking players to consistently making good rotations is a reasonable request.

Obviously Monty feels the same way which is why he sticks with a defense that asks for rotation, yet the players still don't rotate properly. This is the heart of the controversy over Monty. Either his patience will pay off and the young players will eventually get the system, or Benson's patience will wear thin and Monty will be fired for not adapting his system to the players ability to run it.

To be fair, you are placing the entirety of the blame in this statement on the players inability to run Monty's system. That's a flawed premise considering 0 sets of players have been able to execute it properly in his 3+ years. You talk in black and white on this issue.

The heart of the controversy is not whether or not the players get it, it's whether or not Monty gets it.

You are incorrect. CP3's last season the team was 10th in Defensive rating, 3rd in Defensive Rebounding Percent and 6th in Turnover Percent LINK Fans were upset that defensive anchor Emeka Okafor got snubbed as an All Star and they thought David West played decent defense. That veteran squad did pretty well with Monty's system. They "hung their hat on defense" and for 2 short runs during that season, they looked like dark horse contenders. Unfortunately they'd usually follow up an impressive win streak with an equally horrid losing streak, but there's no denying that the defense was solid that year with all those veterans running it.

Yes, we had defenders on that team. CP, Oak, Ariza. I'm not sure if those players made Monty's system worked, or vice versa. My point is, we don't have those type defenders yet it seems like we're running the same system. Shouldn't Monty try to adapt to the players we have instead on forcing a round peg in a square hole? He's not Pop or Phil.

10th in Defensive rating

Since when is 10th in the league an achievement for a defensive HC? We also had Trevor Ariza, who was an above average wing defender at worst.

I have no earthly idea how Quail, NOLAbaby (well, I kind of do here, just seems like an attention whore), and yourself constantly come to the defense of this man to the point you're window dressing a 10th place defensive finish led by one of the league's best PGs/a defensive wing/a defensive C as a crowning achievement.

Do you really, honestly, believe Monty to be the coach for this team or are you just too prideful to admit you were wrong?

I respect you as a poster. You know more about the game than I do. You are better poster too. Your arguments are articulated better than mine. But you are dead fricking wrong here. Monty Williams sucks. There is no other way to put it. This board should be united under the banner of kicking his arse to the curb, not squabbling over 10th place finishes in DRating 3 years ago.

Is Monty being patient because he knows ownership has confidence in what he's trying to do, or is he being stubborn and only knows one way to coach even as his seat gets warmer. That's the $64,000 question and the answer will determine who the coach is next year.

He's definitely a "my way or the highway" coach.

Come on man. We can't do this if you're going to be unreasonable. You said 0 sets of players have been able to execute this defense. I showed where one set executed it to a Top 10 level. Top 10 in a 30 team league = above average to good.

This year's team is currently #9 in offense, if they could also execute the defense at a top 10 level they'd be pretty damn good. The only teams that are currently both Top 10 in offense and defense are the Spurs, Heat, Clippers, and Timberwolves.

Good point. This often gets overlooked ("Anybody can win with CP"), but it is important. Monty had a barely NBA-worthy roster the last two seasons. He no longer has that excuse. There are several new pieces to incorporate, however, and that takes time. I am not saying he should get the whole season to get it figured out, but we should at least see what he can do with a healthy roster for at least a month, right? If the defense hasn't improved by around the All-Star break, I am guessing Monty's seat gets a lot hotter and deservedly so. This is not a make or break season for this team. Let's figure out what we have in our roster and coaching staff before we burn it to the ground.

This has been an ongoing problem the last few years along with allowing scrub big men to kill us.

Guys like Jodie Meeks, Nick Young, Rodney stuckey, Jared Dudley (generally not very good players) light up the Pels routinely
